About The Position

PerkinElmer is seeking a Patent Agent or Patent Attorney with a background in mass spectrometry and chromatography instrumentation to join our Intellectual Property team. This is a full-time, on-site position based at PerkinElmer’s Woodbridge, Ontario facility. This role partners closely with inventors and R&D teams to capture and protect innovations and support PerkinElmer's Analytical Solutions, including mass spectrometry and chromatography instrumentation, software, and related products. Responsibilities will include patent portfolio management, invention harvesting, patent drafting and prosecution, performing patent searches and freedom-to-operate analyses, strategic planning, competitive landscape assessments, providing due diligence and transactional support, and advising on various patent matters. The successful candidate will function as a trusted technical peer to scientists and engineers, spending time on the laboratory floor and in cross-functional design reviews, bringing a rigorous technical foundation in mass spectrometry and chromatography combined with demonstrated expertise in Canadian and U.S. patent practice.

Requirements

  • Registered to practice in Canada as a Patent Agent or Patent Attorney, in good standing—either registered with the College of Patent Agents and Trademark Agents (CPATA) as a patent agent, or admitted to a Canadian provincial bar with authority to practice as a patent attorney—with 2–7 years of post-registration experience in patent prosecution and IP practice.
  • Registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) as a patent agent or patent attorney, in good standing.
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, physics, chemical engineering, or other scientific/engineering field related to analytical instrumentation.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge of mass spectrometry and chromatography instrumentation.
  • Skilled in drafting and prosecuting patent applications, conducting patent searches, performing patentability, freedom-to-operate, and competitive landscape assessments, and determining inventorship.
  • Ability to independently manage patent portfolios, external patent counsel relationships and budgets, and internal IP database and docketing system.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts for both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong research, analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Must be able to work on-site at the Woodbridge, Ontario facility on a full-time basis; complete required site safety training; and work regularly in active analytical chemistry and instrumentation laboratories.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree (MSc or PhD) or equivalent technical experience in mass spectrometry, ion physics, separations science, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with patent portfolio strategy for analytical instrumentation, scientific instruments, or a related hardware/hardware-software integrated technology domain.
  • Familiarity with PCT procedures, EPO practice, and international IP strategy.
  • Experience supporting patent due diligence for M&A transactions, licensing, and other transactional matters.
  • Working knowledge of IP management and docketing software.

Responsibilities

  • Manage specific patent portfolios for mass spectrometry and chromatography instrument lines, including patent filing and prosecution strategy to support PerkinElmer's competitive position in analytical instrumentation markets.
  • Work directly with R&D engineers and scientists to identify, evaluate, and protect novel innovations.
  • Draft, file, and prosecute high-quality patent applications before the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO), United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO), and international patent offices (PCT/national phase).
  • Manage and instruct outside patent counsel on foreign and domestic prosecution matters.
  • Conduct product clearance reviews; identify and navigate freedom-to-operate issues.
  • Perform patent landscape assessments and competitive patent intelligence to inform product development and business strategy; monitor and evaluate third party patent portfolios.
  • Support patent due diligence activities for M&A and technology transactions involving analytical instrumentation IP.
  • Provide strategic patent guidance to internal stakeholders, including R&D and product management teams.
  • Develop and deliver patent-specific training for inventors, R&D staff, and business teams.
  • Promote a culture of invention capture and IP awareness across the Woodbridge site and broader organization.
  • Comply with all site health, safety, and environmental (HSE) policies; complete required site safety training.
  • Regularly attend and work within active analytical instrumentation laboratories in support of IP activities.
  • Manage IP-related budgets, docketing systems, and external counsel relationships.
