About The Position

The Part-Time Teacher supports the Fostering Leadership Academy by providing structured academic instruction to youth participants during the summer program. This position is responsible for planning and delivering engaging, age-appropriate lessons in Math, English Language Arts (ELA), and general studies to promote academic growth, skill development, and student confidence. The Teacher ensures that participants receive approximately 90 minutes of Math instruction and 90 minutes of ELA instruction daily while fostering a positive, structured, and supportive learning environment. This role collaborates with program staff to support overall youth development and program success.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field required
  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate required
  • Strong understanding of reading, writing, and literacy development appropriate for the age group served
  • Knowledge of instructional strategies and classroom management techniques appropriate for youth
  • Knowledge of mathematics, reading, writing, and literacy development appropriate for the age group served
  • Computer and software applications (e.g., Microsoft Office, virtual learning tools, and basic data tracking systems) necessary to perform the duties of the position
  • Understanding of lesson planning, student engagement, and differentiated instruction
  • Knowledge of youth development principles and creating a supportive learning environment.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Manage time effectively, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and program partners
  • Deliver engaging instruction and adapt teaching methods to meet diverse learning needs
  • Maintain a structured, positive, and inclusive classroom environment
  • Monitor student progress and provide appropriate support and feedback
  • Exercise professional judgment in classroom management and decision-making
  • Handle sensitive and confidential student information appropriately
  • Attend and participate in required trainings and program meetings

Nice To Haves

  • Experience teaching or supporting youth in a classroom, tutoring, or educational setting preferred
  • Experience working in a human services or youth-focused environment preferred but not required

Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver structured, engaging instruction in Math, English Language Arts (ELA), and general academic subjects in alignment with program goals

  • Provide encouragement and support to build student confidence and academic success
  • Collaborate with program staff to support overall youth development and program success
  • Maintain attendance records and basic program documentation as required
  • Ensure a safe and supportive environment for all youth participants
  • Operate within the guidelines of the Employee Handbook and agency policies and procedures

  • Perform other duties as assigned
