About The Position

Under the direction of the Deputy Trial Court Administrator and the Chief Probation Officer, this role supervises probationers, ensuring compliance with probation and bond conditions. Responsibilities include conducting investigations, preparing reports for judicial review, making recommendations for non-compliance, conducting alcohol/drug assessments, and referring defendants to appropriate programs and agencies.

Requirements

Bachelor's Degree in criminal justice, psychology, counseling or closely related area.
Six months of experience in an area of criminal justice in a counseling, caseworker or related capacity (internship experience counts).
Certified by the State of Michigan to conduct alcohol assessments.
Basic computer skills required.

Responsibilities

Supervises probationers and ensures all conditions of probation and bond are met.
Conducts investigations and prepares reports to assist the Judge in sentencing.
Makes recommendations regarding probationers failing to comply with their probation.
Conducts alcohol/drug assessments.
Refers defendants to various programs and resource agencies to assist probationers with drug, alcohol and/or other problems.
Investigates the background of persons awaiting sentencing on district court convictions, including reviewing criminal history, employment, and interviewing relevant parties.
Conducts pre-sentence interviews and bond reviews.
Administers Preliminary Breath Tests and urine drug screens as needed.
Prepares pre-sentence reports with recommendations on court action.
Contacts victims, assists, investigates, and determines the amount of restitution owed.
Conducts intake procedures with new probationers, explaining probation orders, court policies, goals, and processing necessary records.
Collects information to identify problem areas, weaknesses, and strengths during probation.
Monitors and assesses compliance with terms of probation, including counseling, payments, restitution, and community service.
Meets with defendants in person, in jail, or in the field, conducting home visits.
Supervises felony offenders on bond pending trial and/or plea.
Prepares bond violations for judges and prosecutors.
Initiates and follows through with probation violation and show cause proceedings.
Appears in District Court to testify at probation violation and bond violation hearings.
Appears in Probate Court or Circuit Court matters as needed or subpoenaed.
Maintains and updates probation records, including individual probationer files, and generates amendments and discharges.
Compiles and maintains monthly probation caseload statistics and pre-sentence report statistics.
Enters data in DCCMIS as required by the State of Michigan.
