About The Position

The Penn State Altoona Visual Art Studies (VAST) program invites applications for a part-time adjunct instructor for the Fall 2026 semester. This position is designed to support foundational coursework across studio art and introductory design, serving both majors and non-majors within a small, student-centered program. The successful candidate will teach one or more of the following courses: ART 20: Introduction to Drawing (Tues/Thurs, 4:35 PM – 6:50 PM), ART 40: Introduction to Printmaking (Mon/Wed, 4:35 PM – 6:50 PM), or GD 110: User Experience: Concepts and Principles (Mon/Wed, 1:35 PM – 3:50 PM). Course assignments will be determined based on program needs and candidate expertise. Duties include teaching assigned courses during the Fall 2026 semester; developing and delivering course content aligned with program learning objectives; providing feedback and assessment; and serving as a resource to students in the VAST program. Instruction will include both technical skill development and conceptual engagement appropriate to introductory-level coursework. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to teach foundational studio practices such as drawing and/or printmaking, as well as introductory graphic design concepts with an emphasis on user experience (UX). Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite and an ability to connect traditional studio approaches with contemporary design thinking is preferred. This is a part-time appointment for the Fall 2026 semester. Compensation is commensurate with experience and in accordance with Penn State policies.

Requirements

  • Master of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art, Graphic Design, or a related field (or equivalent professional experience)
  • Ability to teach foundational studio practices such as drawing and/or printmaking
  • Ability to teach introductory graphic design concepts with an emphasis on user experience (UX)

Nice To Haves

  • Prior teaching experience at the college level
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite
  • Ability to connect traditional studio approaches with contemporary design thinking
