About The Position

Performs skilled manual labor in the care and maintenance of parks, landscaped areas, drainage ditches, aquatic facilities, and related City properties. Operates tools, machinery, vehicles, and heavy equipment in a safe and efficient manner. Operates equipment such as tractors, skid steer loaders, rubber-tire loaders, power brooms, and other maintenance equipment as assigned. Duties include maintenance and operation support for the City of Sweetwater swimming pool and splash pad, including facility cleaning, chemical monitoring and application, equipment maintenance, and ensuring safe operation of aquatic facilities. Duties also include supporting other sections as directed and performing other related work as assigned. This position requires lifting and carrying materials weighing up to 75 pounds or more and working outdoors in varying weather conditions, including extreme summer heat and winter cold.

Requirements

  • Skill in operating assigned vehicles, equipment, and tools safely and efficiently.
  • Skill in driving and maneuvering equipment over various types of terrain.
  • Skill in operating maintenance equipment and tools.
  • Skill in operating a two-way radio.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to identify and correct potential safety hazards.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work in all weather conditions for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to drag up to 60 pounds.
  • Ability to pull up to 125 pounds.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience operating the equipment described above.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in landscaping and grounds maintenance.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Texas Driver License.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures related to the operation of equipment, tools, and vehicles.
  • Knowledge of landscaping, grounds maintenance, and general construction practices.

Responsibilities

  • Pick up and dispose of trash in parks and other assigned areas.
  • Clean and disinfect public restrooms located in parks.
  • Mow grass and control weeds using tractors equipped with shredders, power mowers, and weed eaters.
  • Prune trees and shrubs using hand and power tools.
  • Repair and paint fences, playground equipment, restrooms, picnic tables, and other park facilities.
  • Repair water leaks occurring in City parks and the city cemetery.
  • Clean and maintain drainage ditches and culverts.
  • Operate various maintenance tools and equipment such as roto-tiller, rotary sweeper, brush chipper, sod cutter, edger, push mower, weed eater, welder, cutting torch, chainsaw, plow, shovel, rake, hoe, sharpshooter, yo-yo, applicable hand tools as needed.
  • Report daily to the supervisor regarding the operating condition of assigned equipment, accidents, and any conditions preventing completion of assigned duties.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Communicate with supervisors and crew members via two-way radio.
  • Load and transport materials and equipment.
  • Clean culverts, drains and parkways.
  • Assist with the operation, maintenance, and upkeep of the city swimming pool, splash pad, and related aquatic facilities.
  • Perform routine cleaning and sanitation of aquatic facilities, including pool decks, splash pad surfaces, restrooms, pump rooms, and associated structures.
  • Monitor, test, record, and maintain proper water chemistry levels in accordance with applicable state and local regulations and departmental procedures.
  • Safely handle, store, transport, and apply pool and splash pad chemicals in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and applicable safety regulations.
  • Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and perform minor repairs to pumps, filters, valves, plumbing systems, chemical feed systems, and other aquatic facility equipment.
  • Assist in preparing aquatic facilities for seasonal opening and closing, including inspections, cleaning, repairs, and equipment servicing.
  • Identify and report safety hazards, equipment malfunctions, water quality concerns, and facility maintenance needs to the supervisor.
  • Assist with maintaining compliance with all applicable health, environmental, and safety standards governing public aquatic facilities.
  • Perform other aquatic facility maintenance and operational duties as necessary to ensure safe, clean, and efficient operation of City aquatic facilities.
