About The Position

The Parks Regional Manager is responsible for the general oversight and management of the Northeast Region of Vermont State Parks. This position requires excellent interpersonal, communication, and relationship building skills, as well as significant knowledge of recreation management, capital improvement planning, day-to-day park operations and maintenance, and facility management. The Parks Regional Manager is part of an interdisciplinary team responsible for developing long-range management plans and making decisions related to the stewardship of agency lands. They work with a statewide management team to develop, coordinate, and implement policies affecting state parks. This role is responsible for various regional budgets, making significant capital improvement decisions for projects that can exceed $1 million in budget and scope. The Parks Regional Manager directly supervises three staff persons (two Regional Operations Managers and one Regional Facilities Manager) and indirectly supervises and supports six other full-time regional positions and approximately 100 seasonal staff. The position requires coordination with internal and external stakeholders, effective communication within the region and state, meeting facilitation, weekly travel, conducting public meetings, and public speaking engagements, including contact with the media. This position oversees visitor relations and customer service, investigating and responding to visitor disputes and complaints. The Regional Manager contributes to the health and wellbeing of park visitors.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and objectives of recreation and parks planning, development, management and administration.
  • Knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, and materials used in the maintenance and operation of a State Park.
  • Knowledge of natural resource conservation principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of supervisory and management principles, methods, and techniques.
  • Working knowledge of landscaping methods and techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
  • Ability to plan, assign, supervise, and review the work of subordinates.
  • Skill in working with Microsoft Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Skill in working in team settings.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Access to some means of private transportation.
  • Bachelor's degree AND four (4) years or more of experience in management, administration, planning, maintenance administration or coordination, including one (1) year of supervisory experience.
  • OR Two years of full-time college work OR an associate's degree AND six (6) years or more of experience in management, administration, planning, maintenance administration or coordination, including one (1) year of supervisory experience.

Responsibilities
