About The Position

The Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking an exceptional candidate to fill our current vacancy. This candidate will have excellent communication skills, both written and verbal; high ethical standards; understands the importance of team work, coaching and mentoring staff; has the ability to create, implement and evaluate recreation programs to meet the public needs; strong organizational skills to supervise facility operations, recreational programs, facility rentals and athletic field allocations, and special events, simultaneously with various stakeholders; highly motivated individual who can develop, market and maintain new and existing recreational programs; and excellent interpersonal and networking skills to enhance program opportunities and partnerships. The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) maintains and enhances the quality of life in San Diego County by providing parks and recreational opportunities for residents and visitors. Our nationally accredited, award-winning system includes local and regional parks, campgrounds, over 350 miles of trails, fishing lakes, state-of-the-art recreation centers and sports complexes, ecological preserves, and open space preserves. We offer hundreds of programs, ranging from an award-winning Outdoor Adventure Program to cutting edge activities that contribute to healthy communities and lifestyles. Our facilities cover more than 50,000 acres, are open year-round, and are operated and maintained by County staff, volunteers, and service contracts. Parks and Recreation has an annual budget of over $82 million and a total of 438 employees.

Requirements

  • One (1) year of experience as a Recreation Program Coordinator with the County of San Diego; OR, Three (3) years of experience as a recreation leader, teacher, counselor, park ranger, or closely related position in a recreational facility, leading and coordinating recreational programs and/or activities.
  • Experience must have included developing and implementing recreational programs and activities, and a minimum of one (1) year supervising or leading subordinate staff.
  • Appropriate college-level education may substitute for up to one (1) year of the required experience.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise facility operations, recreational programs, facility rentals and athletic field allocations, and special events, simultaneously with various stakeholders
  • Develop, market and maintain new and existing recreational programs
  • Create, implement and evaluate recreation programs to meet the public needs
  • Coach and mentor staff
