About The Position

Come join our extraordinary Parks Operations Team as a Parks Operations Worker II. Positions assigned to the Parks Operations Worker series perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks associated with maintenance, repair, and construction work in parks, trails, open spaces, and other public properties assigned to the Park Operations Division. Incumbents in the Worker II level diagnose problems, perform basic repairs, perform skilled tasks, implement and monitor preventative maintenance, and use a wide variety of hand tools. Under limited direction, this position oversees and performs maintenance and construction work for parks, gardens, trails, and specialized recreation areas. Incumbents cultivate and fertilize grounds, trees, shrubs, and landscape beds, control pests and identify plant disease, build and repair benches, tables, and related structures, install and repair irrigation systems, and inspect, maintain, and repair playground equipment.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED; and Two years of related experience, some of which must include equipment operation; or Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and ability required to perform the job.
  • Pesticide applicators license (must be obtained within 12 months of hire);
  • Some assignments may require special training and certification.
  • Must have a driving record free of serious or frequent violations.
  • Qualified applicants will be required to provide a driving abstract before hire.
  • Must be able to meet the physical requirements of the job.
  • All qualified applicants must pass a criminal background check.
  • Knowledge of common practices, methods, and materials used in park maintenance and construction work.
  • Knowledge of operation and maintenance requirements of various park maintenance equipment and machinery.
  • Knowledge of standard hand and power tools and equipment used in parks maintenance activities.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures involving fungicides, pesticides, herbicides, and related chemicals used in park maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and regulations related to park operations.
  • Knowledge of procedures and practices used in controlling or eradicating plant and insect diseases.
  • Knowledge of proper methods of planting, cultivating, and pruning for hedges, trees, shrubs, lawns, and landscape beds.
  • Knowledge of basic and preventative maintenance programming for grounds, landscaping and structures.
  • Knowledge of irrigation and drainage system maintenance and construction.
  • Knowledge of pesticide application and integrated pest management practices.
  • Knowledge of basic recordkeeping procedures and electronic filing systems.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics.
  • Ability to use a variety of hand tools and motorized equipment.
  • Ability to operate maintenance machinery and equipment, including vehicles.
  • Ability to read and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work in a safe manner and in accordance with safety rules and regulations.
  • Ability to maintain written records.
  • Ability to operate park-related equipment and tools.
  • Ability to read and understand warning labels.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Programs and maintains the sports facility lights, ensuring that fields are prepared for official use.
  • Weeds, cultivates, plants, fertilizes, and irrigates lawns and landscape beds.
  • Mows, aerates, and edges lawn areas using power and hand tools.
  • Rakes sweeps and vacuums leaves, lawn clippings, etc., using power blower and hand tools.
  • Prunes and trims trees, hedges, bushes, and other shrubbery.
  • Cleans, maintains, and inspects public facilities in parks, city grounds, and natural resource areas.
  • Operates and provides routine maintenance on a variety of standard power tools, heavy equipment, and machinery used in parks maintenance and repair activities regularly.
  • Applies pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and other related chemicals in park, recreation, and open space areas according to the City’s Integrated Pest Management Policies and Procedures.
  • Assists in the installation and minor repair of irrigation systems.
  • Builds and repairs benches, tables, fences, signs, and related structures; assists with cement work and painting.
  • Plants and cares for trees, turf, and shrubs.
  • Inspects, maintains, and repairs playground equipment, benches, and restrooms.
  • Obtains special certification as needed for playground equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Orders supplies, meets with vendors; may monitor and track vendor performance.
  • Collects and organizes data and information, prepares records and reports.
  • Provides direction to volunteers, part-time and seasonal staff; monitors the work of contractors.
  • Performs work in accordance with sound safety practices and within expectations regarding customer service.
  • Responds to after-hours emergency calls related to City properties.
  • Create and update daily work orders.
  • Completes and files pesticide application records.
