About The Position

The Greater Vallejo Recreation District (GVRD) is seeking a Part Time Parks Maintenance Worker to assist the full-time maintenance crew in all aspects of grounds and facility maintenance. GVRD manages over 400 acres of public park space and maintains over 1,000 acres of public land, operating as a separate government agency from the City of Vallejo. This role involves performing a variety of minor repairs, routine maintenance on equipment, and technical tasks as directed. The GVRD is committed to serving area residents and enhancing quality of life through its parks and programs.

Requirements

Basic methods and techniques of general construction, grounds maintenance and custodial work.
Basic operational characteristics of mechanical equipment and tools used in the area of work assigned.
Ability to learn to perform a variety of maintenance, construction, custodial and repair work in the area of work assigned.
Ability to learn fertilizer composition and application; plant identification, care, pruning, and maintenance practices.
Ability to learn mowing techniques and operation of a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor and a variety of manual tasks for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Ability to maintain mental capacity, which allows for effective interaction and communication with others.
Some general maintenance experience performing similar maintenance work within park, landscaped areas and building facilities is desirable.
Graduation from High School or equivalent.
Possession of valid California driver’s license with an acceptable driving record is required.

Responsibilities

Assist full-time maintenance crew in all aspects of park, facilities and buildings maintenance as directed.
Maintain landscaping in District parks, grounds and buildings using a variety of hand and power tools; prune shrubs and trees; mow and edge lawns and fields as directed.
Perform minor repairs on irrigation system; dig holes to expose irrigation pipe; repair as needed.
Clean park grounds, buildings and facilities; clean restrooms, offices and empty trash receptacles; haul trash and debris as directed.
Routinely inspect walls, sidewalks and play equipment for graffiti and remove as directed.
Inspect play equipment for unsafe structures and hazards; repair as necessary or refer to supervisor.
Prepare baseball and softball fields in advance of games, including watering, dragging the infields, and chalking appropriate lines; set out bases; clean dugouts and bleachers and empty trash.
Perform turf maintenance functions on turf areas including mowing, fertilizing, aerating, topdressing, and overseeing as directed.
Perform routine maintenance on work trucks; wash and detail trucks.
Work day or evening hours and assigned weekends and holidays.
Provide support as needed for various recreation programs.
Perform other duties as assigned.
