About The Position

This position performs a variety of semiskilled maintenance, construction, and repair work in the area of parks and grounds maintenance. Responsibilities include performing custodial duties, loading and unloading equipment and supplies, performing light maintenance tasks, operating various landscape maintenance equipment, assisting with planting and cultivating flowers and plants, pruning trees and shrubs, raking leaves, edging and mulching beds, weeding, mowing grass, edging curbs and walkways, performing routine maintenance on equipment, and assisting with the application of pesticides and herbicides. The role also involves operating trucks, tractors, and loaders for grounds preparation and maintenance, responding to public inquiries and complaints, and performing other duties as directed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience performing related ground maintenance work.
  • Possess or be able to obtain a valid State of Florida driver's license by the date of hire.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of general landscape construction, maintenance, and repair related to the area of work assigned.
  • Knowledge of equipment and tools used in the area of work assigned.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Ability to perform a variety of semiskilled maintenance, construction, and repair work in the area of work assigned.
  • Ability to operate a variety of vehicular, light equipment, and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Ability to perform a variety of manual tasks for extended periods of time and in unfavorable weather conditions.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform basic calculations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to follow all safety rules and regulations of the department to which they are assigned.
  • Utilize standard hand tools, including hammers, wrenches, rakes, shovels, and screwdrivers.
  • Operate standard grounds maintenance machinery and equipment, including mowers, edgers, weed eaters, and blowers.
  • Utilize small power equipment, including chain saws.
  • Operate trucks, tractors, and loaders.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional qualifying experience or completion of coursework at an accredited college or university in a job-related field may substitute on a year-for-year basis for one year of the required experience or education.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in planting, cultivating, and watering flowers, plants, shrubs, trees, annuals, and turf areas.
  • Assists in cutting, pruning, and trimming trees, shrubs, and hedges.
  • Rakes leaves and removes fallen limbs and trash.
  • Edges and mulch bed areas.
  • Weeds flowerbeds.
  • Mows and trims grass.
  • Edges curbs and walkways.
  • Performs routine maintenance on tractors, mowers, and power and hand tools.
  • Assists in the application of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers.
  • Operates truck, tractor, and loaders in grounds preparation and maintenance work.
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; investigate and respond to complaints from the public; resolve issues in the area of assignment.
  • Performs other duties as directed.
