About The Position
The purpose of this position is to perform routine turf and athletic field maintenance at NRC; perform equipment, facility, and grounds maintenance; and perform some routine equipment maintenance and repairs. This is accomplished by operating a variety of turf equipment; complete routine mowing, spraying, and athletic field work; and completing maintenance tasks as instructed. Other duties include assisting with athletic and special event setup and teardown as well as storm cleanup.
Requirements
- High School diploma or GED
- At least 1 year experience operating various light to medium duty turf equipment (mowers, ballfield tractors, paint machines, sprayers, power and hand tools)
- Knowledge of commercial turf equipment, pesticide application, athletic field layout, and irrigation systems
- Skill in controlling operations of assigned equipment
- Skill in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems
- Skill in talking to others to convey information effectively
- Ability to operate assigned equipment
- Ability to work cooperatively with City officials, other employees, and the general public
- Ability to work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others
- Ability to meet the mental and physical demands of the position
- Must have a valid driver's license issued by N.C. or another state
- Ability to obtain NC pesticide applicator license within first 6 months of employment

Responsibilities
- Completes routine turf management functions (mowing, trimming, spraying, athletic field layouts)
- Follows safety procedures of the equipment and ensures that equipment is operated correctly
- Operates a variety of commercial turf equipment to complete turf maintenance
- Receives and follows project outlines and instructions
- Performs minor equipment maintenance
- Coordinates heavy equipment repairs and maintenance with the fleet division
- Performs preventative maintenance on small engine equipment
- Provides event support by assisting with event setups and breakdowns
- Sprays turf and ballfields as directed to prevent weeds and maintain a safe playing surface
- Performs other duties as assigned
