About The Position

The City of Port St. Lucie is an equal opportunity employer. This position requires the applicant to successfully pass a drug screening. This is a part-time position. The starting salary for this position depends on qualifications and is as follows: Parks Maintenance Worker I- $20.21 - $23.24 Parks Maintenance Worker II- $21.22 - $24.40 Parks Maintenance Worker III- $22.28 - $25.62 This role involves semi-skilled and manual work in maintaining various grounds, fields, and facilities. It facilitates the development of public trust and confidence in the City. This position is considered an "Essential Position" for the purpose of Emergency Management, requiring 24 hours a day, 7 days per week availability during City of Port St Lucie emergencies, as determined by City Administrators, Emergency Manager or City Officials. Emergency duties will be assigned as needed.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma is required.
  • Parks Maintenance Worker I: Two (2) years of grounds maintenance experience is required.
  • Parks Maintenance Worker II: One (1) year as a Maintenance Worker I for a municipal or county Parks & Recreation Department is required. Three (3) years of grounds maintenance experience is required. One (1) year of experience in the operation and routine maintenance of moderately heavy trucks or similar equipment is required.
  • Parks Maintenance Worker III: Two (2) years as a Maintenance Worker II for a municipal or county Parks & Recreation Department. Four (4) years of grounds maintenance experience required. One (1) year of experience in the operation and routine maintenance of moderately heavy trucks or similar equipment is required.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and maintenance of a clean driving record are required, with the ability to obtain a valid Florida driver’s license within 30 days from the date of hire.
  • Parks Maintenance Worker II & III: CDL Class B driver’s license required (Class A for III).
  • Parks Maintenance Worker III: Limited Lawn and Ornamental Certification is required.
  • Parks Maintenance Worker II & III: Certification in Green Industry Best Management Practices (BMPs) for the state of Florida is required (within nine months for II).
  • Knowledge of tools and equipment required to perform duties.
  • Knowledge of grounds keeping practices and principles.
  • Skill in the operation and preventive maintenance of equipment and related tools.
  • Ability to operate equipment required to perform duties.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor under various weather conditions.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with City employees and the public.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains equipment and facilities by performing manual labor and semi-skilled work.
  • Maintains various grounds, fields, and parks by performing mowing, weeding, tilling, raking, digging and other manual labor tasks.
  • Prepares fields, grounds, and courts for athletic activities.
  • Performs tasks of painting, irrigation maintenance and spraying.
  • Performs sodding, seeding, trimming, edging, mulching and similar work in parks and other City grounds.
  • Performs litter control functions, cleans restrooms.
  • Sets up picnics and other areas.
  • Operates vehicles and equipment and performs preventative maintenance functions on the vehicles and equipment.
  • Makes daily written and oral reports.
  • Informs and directs the public in the use of facilities.
  • Responsible for educating the public about park rules and regulations (Parks Maintenance Worker II).
  • Performs tasks of turf drainage system installations (Parks Maintenance Worker II & III).
  • Performs Verti cutting, aerifying, topdressing, fertilizing and similar work in parks and other City grounds (Parks Maintenance Worker II & III).
  • Must be able to operate vehicles with trailers to load/unload large turf equipment (Parks Maintenance Worker II & III).
  • Performs preventative maintenance functions on the vehicles, tractors and power equipment (Parks Maintenance Worker II & III).
  • Operates single and tandem axle dump trucks, water truck, and loaders on assigned projects and rework tasks (Parks Maintenance Worker III).
  • Knowledge of the operation, maintenance and use of dump and flatbed trucks or tractors and of the less complex parks equipment (Parks Maintenance Worker III).
