About The Position

Under direct supervision of the Parks Supervisor, the purpose of this position is to maintain City parks, grounds, facilities, and amenities. Work is primarily performed at/on parks and athletic fields in upkeep and maintenance of City Property. Employees perform manual level work and possess dexterity and manipulative ability, utilize a variety of hand tools and equipment in the performance of tasks, and usually work in adverse environmental conditions. Performs related work as required. Depending on the applicant’s experience, licenses, and skills, the position can be filled at Level I or II.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Two (2) years of supplemental vocational/technical training and certifications related to parks/grounds operation, maintenance, or project management; or equivalent combination of education, training and expertise (Level I).
  • Technician's licenses i.e. Landscape Irrigation Technician, Landscape Industry Certified Exterior Technician (NALP), Master Gardeners, Certified Tree Worker Aerial Lift Specialist, TCIA’s Certified Tree care Safety Professional (CTSP), or other qualifying parks maintenance certifications (Level I).
  • Two (2) years of apprenticeship with the City of McKinney as a Park Maintenance Specialist I or equivalent prior work experience (Level II).
  • Qualified licenses i.e. Certified Playground Inspector License, Certified Arborist, Master Gardeners Advanced Training, Certified Parks and Recreation Professional, Irrigators License or similar qualifications as dictated by the job responsibilities (Level II).
  • Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications may be an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.

  • Requires the ability to exercise the judgment required in situations characterized by repetitive or short cycle operations covered by set procedures or sequences.

Responsibilities

  • Provides highly skilled and specialized operations, maintenance, and management of certain elements of the City of McKinney's parks system.
  • Coordinates and executes specific projects under direct supervision (Level I) or with minimal supervision (Level II).
  • Performs maintenance, minor repairs, and adjustments to irrigation systems.
  • Duties may include irrigation/repair/maintenance, landscape maintenance, athletic field maintenance, playground repair/inspection, graffiti removal, carpentry, electrical, plumbing, fabrication, small engine repair, and project management, or some combination thereof.
  • Maintains record or inventory as required.
  • Operates all types of ground maintenance machinery and equipment.
  • Performs regular and preventative maintenance on assigned equipment.
  • Performs a variety of general duties related to the maintenance, upkeep, construction, installation, and repair of City parks, grounds, trails, athletic fields, recreation facilities, buildings, and other City-owned landscaped areas.
  • Performs grounds maintenance i.e. mowing, weed-eating, edging, blowing, pruning, planting, trimming and sodding as needed.
  • Cleans, clears, and disposes of debris and refuse in trash bins and in the landscape from City and municipal properties.
  • Assists in preparations for, and clean-up during and after, special events as needed.
  • Performs manual and office environment work as needed (Level II).
  • Assists in complex irrigation maintenance and repairs (Level II).
  • Performs minor plumbing work as needed (Level II).
  • Performs regular and preventative maintenance and minor repairs on equipment (Level II).
  • Operates and maintains complex equipment including large mowers, tractors, backhoes, skid steers, dump trucks, bucket trucks and aerial lifts as needed (Level II).
  • Perform other duties as assigned or directed.
