About The Position

The Parks Maintenance Worker I performs buildings, grounds, gardening and maintenance duties to care for parks and recreation grounds, facilities and equipment. Positions in this classification primarily work independently following established methods, practices and procedures. Duties involve manual work requiring some skill in equipment operations and facilities maintenance.

Requirements

  • Valid WA State driver’s license and a good driving record.
  • Three years of increasingly responsible park grounds maintenance experience in a municipal parks setting or equivalent.
  • Flagging and First Aid cards are required within 6 months of employment.
  • Public Pesticide Operator.
  • Certified Playground Safety Inspector.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of turf and garden care; parks and building maintenance methods.
  • Ability to perform basic carpentry, plumbing and mechanical repairs; operate park maintenance equipment, vehicles, hand and power tools; organize small projects and complete on time; communicate effectively with supervisor, co-workers and the public; lead small crews in basic duties; perform heavy physical labor.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares soils for lawns, flower beds and shrubs; plants trees, shrubs and flower beds; prunes and maintains plantings.
  • Seeds and cares for lawns: waters, mows, trims, edges, aerates, fertilizes and sprays for insects and weeds; lifts and replants sod.
  • Repairs and constructs playground equipment, buildings, restrooms and sheds.
  • Records and verifies maintenance records for materials, supplies and equipment.
  • Cleans restrooms and parks facilities, picks up litter throughout the parks system and assures grounds and facilities are clean and safe.
  • Maintains and installs drainage, plumbing and irrigation systems with the park grounds.
  • Occasionally records and verifies time sheets for part-time, seasonal and community service workers.
  • Performs routine inspections of park grounds and facilities to update inspection records and recommend needed work.
  • Works with independent contractors in the construction of park grounds or facilities.
  • Provides information and assistance to the public by telephone or in the field when inquiries are made regarding specific park maintenance activities or projects.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
