About The Position

Under general supervision, performs varied skilled, semi-skilled and unskilled tasks in maintaining parks, parkways, medians, trees, park and recreation facilities, and City properties. Operates and maintains a variety of power equipment and hand tools and provides direction to a small work crew in completing daily tasks. Assists other maintenance personnel. This is the senior-level classification in the park maintenance job series. Employees will work independently in performing more skilled tasks or provide direction to Park Maintenance Worker I or temporary maintenance employees in a small work crew as to how to perform tasks, use specialized power tools or operate and maintain equipment. These positions receive daily work assignments from a Park Maintenance Lead Worker or Park Supervisor.

Requirements

  • Two (2) or more years of gardening, nursery, grounds, building or custodial maintenance experience.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Current California Class C driver’s license and an acceptable driving record must be maintained.
  • Knowledge of work layout.
  • Knowledge of proper and efficient use of hand and power tools and equipment.
  • Knowledge of work safety rules and procedures; parks, custodial and landscaped areas.
  • Knowledge of maintenance methods and procedures; gardening, cultivation, pruning, shaping, trimming, pesticide application and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of methods and procedures for different tree and plant species; safe methods for feeding limbs, branches and large brush into the chipper; proper operation of heavier maintenance equipment.
  • Knowledge of layout of sprinkler and irrigation systems; spot welding techniques; minor plumbing and carpentry methods.
  • Skill to operation of equipment such as backhoe, tractor, riding mowers, trencher, chain saw, buzz saw, tree clippers and related small power and hand tools in performing maintenance work.
  • Skill to shred tree limbs, branches and large shrubs by operating a chipper; trim trees, shrubs and large plants at ground level or by using an aerial lift to work at small heights above ground level.
  • Skill to use arc welding equipment to weld chain link fences, bleachers, benches, bridges, fence posts, and roof brackets.
  • Skill to apply pesticides.
  • Ability to assign tasks to co-workers and regularly inspect work for conformance with proper work methods, quality standards and safety techniques.
  • Ability to communicate and work cooperatively with co-workers, contractors and the general public.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral or written instructions; complete basic work activity records and time reports.
  • Ability to perform assigned maintenance tasks following established work procedures and techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Receives daily work assignments and determines what tasks will be completed independently or with the assistance of co-workers.
  • Determines what tools, materials and equipment will be needed for each job.
  • Demonstrates proper use of tools and equipment and effective working techniques to co-workers.
  • Patrols work areas to investigate and report water breaks, fallen trees, physical damage, and graffiti.
  • Mows, edges and rakes turf areas in parks and parkways, median strips and other City properties.
  • Waters trees, plants, shrubs, grass and landscaped areas.
  • Trims, shapes and removes trees, plants and shrubs using power tools or hand tools.
  • Cleans, paints and maintains park buildings, rest rooms and recreation facilities.
  • Inspects playground equipment and adjoining areas for broken glass, dangerous objects or other safety hazards.
  • Maintains proper water levels in lake and remove debris from waterways.
  • Sprays or removes weeds.
  • Picks up and dumps trash, litter and debris into vehicle hauling compartments, truck beds or drops at dump sites.
  • Shreds and disposes of limbs, branches and large brush.
  • Operates dump trucks or pick up trucks towing a trailer to transport materials, equipment, tools and/or co-workers to and from work sites and yard areas.
  • Operates cement mixer to mix quantities of concrete.
  • Prepares soil and plants trees, shrubs and flowers.
  • Lays out, installs, trouble-shoots, repairs and services sprinkler systems and equipment, including controllers and valves.
  • Waters, drags, lines and prepares ball diamonds.
  • Operates tractor, backhoe or trencher as needed.
  • Assists other employees in completing skilled tasks and checking their work in progress and upon completion.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs chain link fences, benches, bleachers, ball fields and rest room facilities.
  • Repairs water breaks and replaces irrigation valves and lines.
  • Performs spot welding and minor carpentry work.
  • Uses an aerial lift to work at small heights above ground level.
  • Drives water trucks, dump trucks, chipper trucks, service utility vehicles or other maintenance equipment.
  • Completes daily and monthly safety inspection records.
  • Orders parts and materials as needed for various jobs.
  • May perform emergency maintenance work given natural disasters.
