About The Position

This position supervises the daily operation of a maintenance crew in parks maintenance, construction and related work. The role involves leading a crew of semi-skilled workers and community service workers or juveniles in various tasks such as mowing, trimming, maintenance, and construction activities within the park system and other city property. The Crew Leader is responsible for planning and assigning equipment and personnel, assisting in hiring and performance evaluations, and participating in daily operations. This role also includes performing on-site inspections to monitor progress and safety, training crew members on equipment usage and maintenance, and maintaining records of personnel time and production reports. Additionally, the position requires communication with colleagues, contractors, and the public, performing minor field repairs on equipment, and providing support for department special events. The Crew Leader must be able to understand and follow instructions, communicate clearly, adapt to changing priorities, use independent judgment for problem-solving, maintain accurate records, and remain calm in stressful situations. Basic computer knowledge is also required.

Requirements

  • High school, plus specialized schooling and/or on the job education in a specific skill area; e.g. data processing, clerical/administrative, equipment operation.
  • Three (3) years related experience and/or training.
  • Twelve (18) to eighteen (18) months related management experience.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Operators Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record (Sports Turf Crew Only).
  • Must possess a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) by the first day of employment.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Class "A" Commercial Driver's License with air brake certification and an acceptable driving record within six months of employment. (Projects Crews Only)
  • Must successfully pass Basic Pesticide Core Exam within one year of employment/promotion date (Beautification and Sports Turf Crews Only).
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers.
  • Ability to perform these mathematical skills using money and other forms of measurement.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of known variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram formats.
  • Ability to effectively communicate information and respond to questions in person-to-person and small group situations with customers, clients, general public and other employees of the organization.
  • Considerable responsibility with regard to general assignments in planning time, method, manner, and/or sequence of performance of own work; may also occasionally assist in the planning of work assignments performed by others within a limited area of operation.
  • Performs work operations which permit FREQUENT opportunity for decision-making of MINOR IMPORTANCE and also FREQUENT opportunity for decision-making of MAJOR IMPORTANCE; the latter of which would affect the work operations of OTHER EMPLOYEES and/or CLIENTELE to a MODERATE DEGREE.
  • Operations requiring ALMOST CONTINUOUS ATTENTION, but work is sufficiently repetitive that a HABIT CYCLE IS FORMED; operations REQUIRING INTERMITTENT DIRECTED THINKING to determine or select materials, equipment or operations where variable sequences may be selected by the employee.

Responsibilities

  • Leads a crew of 5-8 semi-skilled workers and 1-5 community service workers or juveniles performing mowing, trimming, maintenance and various construction activities within the park system and other city property.
  • Plans and assigns equipment and personnel.
  • Assists in screening and selecting new hires, evaluating employees’ performance and counseling staff.
  • Participates with crew members in the daily operations.
  • Inspects vehicles, tractors, front mount mowers, push mowers, weedeaters, etc. each day as they are assigned to a crew.
  • Reads and interprets simple blueprints, sketches and diagrams which may be necessary to perform construction or maintenance activity.
  • Operates gas powered equipment, heavy equipment, power tools and other small tools.
  • Performs on-site inspections of maintenance crew activities to monitor progress, proper procedures and safety practices.
  • Trains crew members in proper use, set-up and maintenance of a variety of fuel powered equipment and power tools.
  • Records and maintains personnel daily time logs.
  • Maintains various man-hours and production reports as required.
  • Communicates with other employees and contractors in person and by two-way radio clearly and in a polite manner.
  • Communicates in a clear and polite manner in person with citizens at the job site.
  • Performs minor field repair of equipment when possible to avert down time of machinery.
  • Provides support for department special events before, during and after the event in areas and for functions relative to essential job duties and/or as otherwise assigned.
  • Performs any other related duties as required or assigned.
