About The Position

This position is located in Mayo, FL. The Park Services Specialist will oversee and participate in all aspects of park operations, including the implementation of resource management projects. Responsibilities include observing, maintaining, and protecting the natural, cultural, historic, and archaeological resources of the park. The role involves participation in prescribed burning, vegetation and wildlife management, site restoration, and water resources management. Data collection and recording for resource management are also key duties. The specialist will construct, clean, maintain, and repair park grounds, facilities, and equipment, conducting routine inspections to ensure standards are met. This role includes planning projects, assigning work, and overseeing volunteers and OPS staff. Visitor interaction is significant, involving answering questions, providing information and directions, explaining facilities and services, and resolving visitor complaints while maintaining good public relations. The position requires planning, organizing, and conducting community outreach activities, special events, and festivals to enhance public understanding of the Florida Park Service and park management objectives. Representation of the park and the Florida Park Service to outside agencies and organizations, disseminating information, and promoting park opportunities are expected. The role involves providing natural and cultural history interpretive programs and unit-specific services. Designing and implementing public marketing and relations programs to encourage corporate, foundation, and private support for the park, as well as researching and identifying potential partnership programs, are also duties. Administrative tasks include preparing various forms and reports, conducting purchasing and fiscal activities, collecting fees, performing cash register transactions, reconciling receipts, answering correspondence, and maintaining park files. The position also involves planning and coordinating the park's volunteer and manpower augmentation program, monitoring volunteer needs, coordinating placement, overseeing schedules, tracking hours, preparing reports, and conducting volunteer meetings, orientations, and training sessions. Other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of general methods and techniques used in the repair and/or maintenance of park facilities, equipment, and grounds.
  • Knowledge of basic math computations.
  • Skill in using a variety of hand and power tools and equipment.
  • Skill in maintenance of facilities and grounds.
  • Skill in the operation and use of various kinds of equipment including pumper-trucks, tractors, and boats.
  • Ability to oversee volunteers.
  • Ability to conduct inspections and maintain park facilities, equipment, and grounds.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to identify and investigate problems.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to perform physical labor using assorted power/gas tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform prescribed burns.
  • Ability to accurately prepare reports.

  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Completion of Ranger Academy.
  • Work rotating shifts including nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Successful completion of background screening will be required for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and participate in all aspects of park operations.

  • Construct, clean, maintain, and repair park grounds, facilities, and equipment utilizing appropriate tools and equipment.
  • Make routine inspections to ensure proper maintenance standards are met.
  • Plan projects, assign work, and oversee volunteers and OPS.
  • Meet visitors, answer questions, provide information and directions, and explain facilities and services provided for public use, enjoyment, and education.
  • Attempt to resolve visitor complaints while maintaining good public relations.

  • Monitor and define suitable park volunteer needs and coordinate volunteer placement.
  • Plan and oversee all volunteer schedules.
  • Track volunteer hours and prepare appropriate reports.
  • Plan and conduct volunteer meetings, volunteer orientation, and training sessions.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
