About The Position

This position exists to provide a safe and pleasant environment for recreational activities by cleaning, repairing, replacing and operating equipment, systems, grounds, facilities, and infrastructure for the use of park visitors and staff. This position primarily inspects and maintains recreational resources outside of developed areas including trails, forested areas, archery range, toilets and fences. Will troubleshoot functions and maintain compliance with Local, State and Federal guidelines (OSHA, ADA, etc.). This position provides management support by hiring, training, scheduling and supervising temporary maintenance personnel and volunteers to accomplish work plan goals and fulfill day-to-day, periodic and long-term maintenance functions. This position has purchasing responsibilities, will work with budgets, contractors and must operate within state fiscal guidelines. This position will acquire and maintain certifications as needed to fulfill the functions of the position. This position must have the basic understanding of computer use to include; Microsoft word, excel and Microsoft outlook. This position must have the basic understanding of GIS. This position must complete/submit regular reports and communicate with park management, State Park management teams, utility companies, outside agencies, partners and the general public.

Requirements

  • At least four years of work experience in construction, farming, ranching, resource management, landscaping, facility management or closely related field, electrical, plumbing or carpentry experience.

  • Basic understanding of GIS.
  • State of Colorado residency is required at the time of application.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state of Colorado driver's license if operating a State vehicle.
  • Driving Background check required.
  • Must comply with Fleet driving requirements.
  • May be required to work weekends/holidays and after hours shifts.
  • May handle pesticides and herbicides.
  • Travel may be required for meetings, trainings and continuing education.
  • May require overnight stays.
  • Must be capable of operating boats, OHV, golf carts, maintenance equipment (including but not limited to: mowers, chain saws, weed whips, tractors, snow plow, backhoe, dump truck and other maintenance related equipment).

Responsibilities

  • Assures work unit trail needs are accomplished effectively and efficiently by planning and completing appropriate trail maintenance duties, resolving trail maintenance related problems, operating within an established budget to purchase materials, tools, equipment, and complete and submit required reports.
  • Designs work plans and completes field work to achieve the park’s maintenance goals for all trail infrastructure while assuring the safety of the public and park employees.
  • Works with Colorado Parks and Wildlife Development Staff, contractors, SE Region Trails Coordinator, and vendors to complete trail projects.
  • Performs maintenance tasks independently or in conjunction with subordinate staff and volunteers in the construction, repair, cleaning and upkeep of infrastructure to further the goals of the maintenance work programs.
  • Helps implement the Cheyenne Mountain State Park forest management plan in conjunction with park management goals.
  • Guides and supervises forestry crew members, volunteers, and contractors in accomplishing forest management goals.
  • Uses various tools to accomplish tasks including: chainsaws; skid steer; and chipper.
  • Responsible for and/or delegates the removal of hazard trees in the park’s developed and backcountry areas.
  • Responsible for removal of trees blocking trail access.
  • Advises the Senior Ranger and Park Manager on recommendations for current and future forestry projects.
  • Operates within an established budget to purchase materials, tools, equipment, and complete and submit required reports.
  • Seeks to find grants and funding opportunities to help manage forestry projects.
  • Manages grants appropriately to implement successful forestry management goals.
  • Helps implement Cheyenne Mountain State Park Weed management plan in conjunction with park management goals within a set budget.
  • Monitors, maintains and manages both of the Cheyenne Mountain Archery Ranges and 3d targets, static targets, toilet, signage, and boundary fencing.
  • Operates and maintains/repairs maintenance related equipment including but not limited to: Tractors, tractor implements, dump truck, snow plow, mowers, landscaping tools, a wide variety of power and hand tools.
  • Performs maintenance tasks independently or in conjunction with subordinate staff in the construction, repair, cleaning and upkeep of targets and infrastructure to further the goals of the maintenance work programs.
  • Cross-trains and assists with preventative and controlled maintenance tasks independent of or in conjunction with other staff in the construction, maintenance, or repair of buildings and facilities.
  • Maintains skills and certifications (if required) in the areas of water systems, sewer, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, painting.
  • Assumes a leadership role in interviewing, hiring, training, supervising, developing work plans, scheduling, motivating, and conflict resolution for temporary employees and volunteers.
  • May supervise volunteer programs including camp hosts, interns, GOCO, court ordered volunteers, or others.
  • May take (and/or recommend to direct supervisor) appropriate corrective / disciplinary action for temporary employees.
  • Prepares records and reports concerning the areas that fall under the park backcountry program including: work plans, progress reports, employee paperwork and evaluations, paperwork associated with making purchases, annual requests for funding from numerous sources, regular periodic reporting for volunteer program, usage reports for fuel, chemicals, periodic activity logs, requests for bids from contractors, vendors, recording work hours and maintaining all records according to policy.
  • Attends trade related trainings and self-educates regularly to ensure proficiency and legal compliance with safety and administrative regulations, maintains required certifications for park systems, and brings section needs and potential liabilities to the attention of park management.
  • Must be able to obtain any or all of the following certifications as needed for specific job assignments and staffing levels: Small Water and Small Wastewater , Dept. of Ag., Herbicide and Pesticide, Trail Certifications, Sawyer Certifications, Qualified Supervisor (QS) with following endorsements General, Industrial Right of way, Rangeland, Vertebrate, Turf.; Class A CDL.
