Parent Educator - Community Outreach

About The Position

The Parent Educator works with families in the Parenting Support Services program, interviewing families and building trusting relationships. The role identifies family strengths and areas for growth, serves as a role model and educator, connects families with community resources, advocates on their behalf, and coordinates treatment with other providers, with a focus on children's developmental needs. The program focuses on adult parents and adolescents or young children within the family unit. The position may require working at multiple sites and is grant funded.

Requirements

Minimum bachelor's degree.
One year of experience in human services or equivalent.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Professional experience working with children and families in crisis.
Cultural sensitivity and knowledge of community resources.
Experience running groups and providing one-to-one services.
Reliable personal transportation.

Responsibilities

Interview families in their homes or in the office to discuss their willingness and appropriateness to participate in Parenting Support Services.
Obtain information about child-rearing practices, budgeting, lifestyle issues, and social interests.
Educate families about parenting, budgeting, community resources, the home environment, advocacy, healthy relationships, and other relevant topics.
Explain the program's purposes, functions, and limitations to clients in their environment.
Review family progress with the family, the Parenting Support Services Supervisor or Manager, and the assigned DCF Worker, revising goals as needed.
Advocate for families, identify needed community resources, and coordinate treatment with other providers.
