About The Position

Under general supervision, performs para-transit dispatch duties; answers phones and enters transit requests into computer; notifies drivers of cancellations and schedule changes; monitors status and locations of vehicles to ensure all scheduled work is performed in a timely manner; follows established City policies and procedures regarding the transportation of elderly and/or passengers with physical disabilities; maintains positive public relations with a broad range of passengers in the provision of transportation services; and performs other related duties. The primary duties and responsibilities include performing dispatch duties; notifying drivers of cancellations and schedule changes; answering phones and entering transit requests into computer; confirming pick-up and drop-off times for the following day. Monitoring status and locations of vehicles to ensure all scheduled work is performed in a timely manner. Reporting equipment malfunctions to supervisor for resolution. Answering questions from passengers regarding schedules and routing; listening to complaints regarding delays or problems encountered in the provision of services. Maintaining timely and accurate radio and telephone contact with drivers; keeping dispatcher informed regarding delays, breakdowns and client transportation problems encountered; completing required paperwork. Maintaining a courteous, professional and efficient manner in passenger relations. Participating in safety and related training programs. Performing related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

  • Possession of a High School diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent; AND six (6) months of related experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess a valid California Class B Driver’s License/Passenger Endorsement.
  • First Aid and CPR.
  • Knowledge of City organization, operations, policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of City Code, City Ordinances, and Standard Operating Manual.
  • Knowledge of Transit operations and area streets and highways.
  • Knowledge of Safety practices including first aid.
  • Knowledge of Standard office principles and procedures including recordkeeping.
  • Knowledge of Telephone etiquette and customer service protocol.
  • Knowledge of Personal computer usage and applicable software.
  • Skill in Following established City policies and procedures regarding the transportation of elderly and/or passengers with physical disabilities.
  • Skill in Operating 2-way radio system and learning/using 10-codes.
  • Skill in Promoting and enforcing safe work practices.
  • Skill in Following oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in Operating standard office equipment and a personal computer utilizing standard and specialized software.
  • Skill in Effective verbal and written communication including hearing normal conversation.
  • Skill in Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with staff, City departments, outside agencies, passengers and the general public.
