About The Position

The Parasitology Laboratory Aide is responsible for the collection, processing and preparing of fecal samples. This role involves meeting department requirements for sample processing rates, accurately labeling tubes, splitting specimens, finding missing samples, and maintaining the organization of the storage refrigerator. The aide will also maintain equipment, be aware of quality control and calibration, and crosstrain in multiple specialties within the department. They will follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), maintain a clean work area, restock supplies, and participate in improving lab efficiency and quality. The role also includes consulting with senior peers on tasks and performing other assigned duties. Associates are expected to conduct themselves ethically and hold each other accountable to the organization's values and standards, with processes in place for reporting concerns.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Attention to detail and organized with ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Proficiency in the English language which allows for participation in team meetings, accurate entry of data into company systems and understanding of written directions
  • Positive, can-do attitude
  • Stationary Position- must be able to remain in a stationary position for up to 2 hours.
  • Constantly operates lab equipment accurately and efficiently
  • Occasionally required to bend, kneel, stoop, or crouch
  • Required to lift, move, and carry up to 20 lbs.
  • The ability to observe details at close range
  • Laboratory environments with potential biohazards present that are mitigated by the mandatory use of PPE
  • Receives general instructions on routine work, detailed instructions on new assignments
  • Work under close to moderate supervision
  • Potential for exposure to agents known to cause zoonotic disease in humans and use of potentially hazardous chemicals as defined by the National Hazard Communication Standards. A complete list of such chemicals is available from department supervision

Responsibilities

  • Collect fecal specimens from login, scan into loads, and prepare for set up.
  • Meet all minimum department requirements for para loads and Fcombo set-up rates.
  • Accurately building loads and label processing tubes.
  • Split specimens for Giardia ELISA when required.
  • Find missing specimens. Print and reconcile queue list.
  • Maintain organization of storage refrigerator.
  • Maintain all equipment including hoods, centrifuges, etc.
  • Awareness of quality control and calibration.
  • Crosstrain and develop knowledge of multiple specialties within department/lab.
  • Follows applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), including safety and quality procedures. Maintains clean and organized work area. Restocks supplies as needed.
  • Participates in improving lab efficiency, quality, and cooperation.
  • Consult with senior peers on non-complex Parasitology tasks to learn through experience.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
