About The Position
Integrative Emergency Services (IES) is seeking skilled and compassionate Paramedics to support Emergency Department teams at St. Luke's Health facilities in The Woodlands and Houston's Vintage area. The role provides direct patient care, supports patient throughput, and helps ensure compliance with ED protocols and standards. Paramedics help optimize patient flow, maintain lobby safety, and support clinical and operational processes. PRN opportunities are available, with a minimum requirement of three shifts per month. An active Texas DSHS registration is required. The role works in a fast-paced emergency department with a wide variety of clinical scenarios and requires physical stamina and adaptability to shift-based schedules. The position reports to Dr. Rosillo and ED leadership and works under the guidance of the triage team and providers. Requirements
- Certified Paramedic with active licensure.
- Active registration on Texas DSHS.
- Demonstrated ability to perform IV starts, phlebotomy, durable medical equipment application, and procedure assistance.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Familiarity with EPIC and other clinical software used to monitor orders, delays, and patient progress.
- Ability to recognize avoidable delays, identify when escalation is needed, and proactively manage tasks.
- Ability to work collaboratively with the Emergency Department team.
- Physical stamina and adaptability to shift-based schedules.
Nice To Haves
- Experience in an emergency department or similar fast-paced clinical setting.
- Competency in ultrasound-guided IV placement, if applicable.
Responsibilities
- Monitor and update patient vital signs in accordance with policy and ESI scoring, identify abnormal vital signs, and address overdue notifications in EPIC (Narrator).
- Maintain continuous observation of lobby patients and newly arriving patients, identify changes in condition, and help maintain lobby order and safety.
- Use laptops or Workstations on Wheels (WOWs) to make real-time updates in EPIC.
- Assist with IV starts and phlebotomy under the direction of the triage team, maintaining communication with that team to minimize delays.
- Monitor EPIC for unacknowledged orders, laboratory delays, sample-collection issues, and radiology delays; communicate delays to appropriate staff and escalate when necessary.
- Assist with applying durable medical equipment and splints to support timely discharge, responding to requests from nurses and clinicians.
- Coordinate with Patient Access Services staff to obtain required patient consents before triage or discharge; monitor EPIC for pending discharges and notify PAS when consents are needed.
- Identify patients who have exceeded 20 minutes from triage to provider without active orders, notify the triage team to initiate Standard Medically Delegated Orders, and assist with related IV starts and lab draws.
- Perform ultrasound-guided IV placement after completing competency training and receiving approval, in accordance with the competency checklist and approved roster.
- Assist providers with wound care, suture setup, and other procedures under direct provider guidance.
- Collaborate with the triage team on EKGs, IVs, blood draws, and vital signs, with a goal of less than 10 minutes from arrival to EKG for applicable patients.
