The Paramedic is responsible for delivering high-quality care and transportation to ill and injured persons, demonstrating clinical competency and compassion. This role requires excellent judgment, the ability to prioritize decisions, and quick action in the patient's best interest. The Paramedic must be self-disciplined, able to develop patient rapport, interview hostile patients, maintain safe distance, and communicate effectively with diverse multicultural groups and age ranges. The position demands the ability to function independently in a constantly changing, non-structured environment, making patient care decisions based on predetermined protocols and accurately administering time-critical medications. The Paramedic will initiate, operate, and maintain advanced lifesaving equipment, including intubation, ventilation, ventilator use, vasopressin drips, blood products, arterial lines, and chest tubes. The work environment involves exposure to environmental changes (e.g., outdoor weather, warehouses, garages), extreme noises, odors, heights, and dust. There is also potential exposure or risk to physical health and safety, including hazardous materials, assault, heavy equipment, and communicable diseases. Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) may be required, along with medical evaluations and clearances.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Completion of a paramedic technical program.
  • One year of paramedic experience.
  • Proficiency in English; ability to read, write, and speak English.
  • Basic computer competency with ability to independently carry out patient care and document appropriately.
  • Current Florida Paramedic licensure/certification.
  • Current American Heart Association Health Care Provider CPR certification.
  • Current ACLS certification.
  • FEMA IS-100, IS-200, IS-700 certification required within 30 days.
  • Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (E.V.O.C) required within 30 days.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record in accordance with Mayo Clinic policy.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience as a Paramedic.
  • Associate or baccalaureate degree.
  • PALS certifications (or must be obtained within 6 months).

Responsibilities

  • Deliver and administer high quality care and transportation to ill and injured persons.
  • Demonstrate clinical competency and compassion in providing for the physical and emotional needs of patients.
  • Exercise excellent judgment and prioritize decisions, acting quickly in the best interest of the patient.
  • Develop patient rapport, interview hostile patients, and maintain safe distance.
  • Recognize and utilize communication unique to diverse multicultural groups and ages.
  • Function independently at an optimum level in a non-structured, constantly changing environment.
  • Make patient care decisions based on predetermined protocols.
  • Calculate and administer critical time-dependent medications appropriately.
  • Initiate, operate, and/or maintain advanced lifesaving equipment.
  • Perform intubation, ventilation, manage ventilators, administer vasopressin drips and blood products, and manage arterial lines and chest tubes.
  • Work with exposure to environmental changes, extreme noises, odors, heights, and dust.
  • Manage potential exposure or risk to physical health and safety, including hazardous materials, assault, heavy equipment, and communicable diseases.
  • Use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required.
  • Complete and pass medical evaluations or clearances.
