About The Position

This position provides pre-hospital and intra-hospital advanced life support care to patients in emergency situations until they can be transferred to an appropriate medical facility. The role involves conducting initial patient assessments, prioritizing efficient patient care, and transporting patients according to Base Hospital protocols. The incumbent serves at the Tohono O'odham Nation Sells Hospital and surrounding service area, acting as the highest-level medical provider on scene to direct patient care. Work is evaluated through quality control procedures by the Department and the Base Hospital to ensure conformity with treatment protocols.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma.
  • One year of experience as a Paramedic.
  • Certification as a Paramedic Level Emergency Medical Technician with the State of Arizona.
  • Must maintain current certification as a Paramedic (EMCT-P) in the State of Arizona.
  • Must maintain current certification in CPR, Advance Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
  • Drug and alcohol testing designated position; must be cleared before starting employment and subject to random testing.
  • Criminal background and National FBI fingerprint check required.
  • 39-month driving record check.
  • May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
  • If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
  • Knowledge of Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.
  • Knowledge of the local road system and skill in route planning.
  • Extensive skill in using emergency communication techniques and operating communication equipment.
  • Knowledge and skill in advanced emergency medicine techniques.
  • Knowledge of topographic anatomy.
  • Knowledge of the major body systems.
  • Knowledge to sufficiently understand the legal considerations of emergency care.
  • Knowledge of the Privacy Act of 1974.
  • Knowledge of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, Public Law 104-191 (HIPAA).
  • Skill and familiarity with emergency and patient transport vehicle characteristics.
  • Skill working with patients of all ages.
  • Ability to recognize medical, environmental, obstetrical, traumatic, and surgical emergencies.
  • Ability to obtain and interpret diagnostic signs and symptoms.
  • Ability to aid in extricating patients from wrecked vehicles and other confining/entrapping situations.
  • Ability to lift, move, position, and handle patients.
  • Ability to perform mass casualty incident management, disaster operations, and hazardous materials recognition/treatment.
  • Ability to perform weapons of mass destruction recognition/treatment.
  • Ability to use specialized heavy equipment.
  • Ability to move and operate all rescue equipment alone within the first year of employment.
  • Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham language and English as a condition of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Independently conducts a complete patient assessment, identifying and treating trauma and medical emergencies using advanced knowledge of anatomy, body systems, emergency medical techniques, and legal considerations.
  • Identifies signs and symptoms of life-threatening conditions and provides appropriate advanced treatment outlined by approved protocols.
  • Assists with moving, lifting, and carrying patients to emergency vehicles and treatment facilities.
  • Treats fractures, dislocations, sprains, eye injuries, and identifies various medical complications, supervising field treatment.
  • Assesses the scene, recognizes the need for ancillary personnel, and requests additional assistance.
  • Triage patients, perform primary and secondary assessments, and determine the extent and seriousness of the patient's condition.
  • Responds to and returns from emergency calls using knowledge of local road systems, traffic, and weather conditions.
  • Safely operates emergency and patient transport vehicles under all conditions, selecting appropriate routes and adhering to traffic laws.
  • Performs patient transport and patient care duties using advanced skills and familiarity with vehicles.
  • Determines appropriate transport modalities, ensuring patient safety.
  • Safely transports patients to various destinations.
  • Performs maintenance of vehicles, including decontamination, supply replacement, cleaning, and minor repairs.
  • Performs safety and maintenance inspections of vehicles and equipment.
  • Uses radio equipment following FCC procedures and communicates effectively orally and in writing with medical and ancillary personnel.
  • Communicates with and transmits EKG information to treatment facilities, supervises field communication, and reports patient assessment and treatment clearly.
  • Maintains Administrative Base Hospital relations.
  • Contributes to team effort.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
