About The Position

This position involves responding to emergency and non-emergency situations, providing Advanced Life Support patient care, and conducting technical functions related to fire protection, suppression, rescue, EMS, and Hazmat. The role requires performing daily inspections of equipment and apparatus to ensure mission readiness. The Paramedic Firefighter Recruit position focuses on developing a trained Paramedic to learn the Firefighter job, while the Paramedic Firefighter position is responsible for providing comprehensive fire protection, suppression, hazmat, rescue, and EMS services. Both roles serve the public in these capacities.

Requirements

  • High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of one (1) year of college in fire suppression, emergency medical services or closely related field.
  • Requires a valid Colorado driver’s license.
  • Requires Colorado State or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic certification.
  • NREMT – 90-day provisional license allows the incumbent to operate as a paramedic until a Colorado State Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic has been issued.
  • Requires American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
  • Requires Firefighter Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) certificate.
  • Requires IFSAC/Pro-Board Firefighter I certification or higher.
  • Requires IFSAC/Pro-Board Hazardous Materials Awareness/Operations certification or higher.
  • Must be eighteen (18) years of age or older (certain positions have reduced age requirements).
  • Must be authorized by the US Department of Homeland Security to work in the United States.
  • Must successfully complete a pre-employment drug screen.
  • Must satisfactorily complete a criminal background check.
  • Perform light to medium work involving walking or standing, and exerting between 20-50 pounds of force regularly.
  • Ability to operate both automobiles and emergency vehicles.
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push or pull up to 75 pounds on a moderate daily basis.
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring limited to substantial climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, bending, crawling, twisting, and reaching.
  • Ability to work with hands above shoulder height or with arms extended at shoulder height with up to 10 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • A minimum of one (1) year of experience in firefighting, as a paramedic, or closely related experience preferred.
  • Requires attaining IFSAC/Pro-Board Firefighter II certification within one (1) year of employment.
  • Requires attaining NWCG S130/190 within one (1) year of employment.
  • Requires attaining IFSAC-Pro-Board Driver Operator certification within one (1) year of employment.
  • Ability to obtain the following ICS Certifications: IS100, 200 & 700 within one (1) year.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and supports a positive, collaborative culture within the City organization.
  • Responds to all fire/rescue, hazmat or medical calls and emergencies, providing care, direction, or support as necessary.
  • Conducts basic maintenance on vehicles and equipment, ensuring readiness of emergency vehicles and stocking of medical supplies.
  • Conducts maintenance of fire facilities, including custodial duties.
  • Assists in fire prevention activities, including facility inspections and providing educational materials.
  • Attends and provides formal recruit training on fire department issues, procedures, and programs for volunteer staff.
  • May oversee EMS functions for the City, including responding to calls and assisting with developing and implementing procedures.
  • Conducts all duties of a Firefighter and a Paramedic, and may act as the Supervisor at the firehouse or on scenes.
  • Attends administrative meetings and departmental representatives as requested.
  • Works 48-hour shifts at fire stations on station duty or on ambulance crew.
  • Attends annual trainings to ensure all required certifications are current and maintained.
  • Conducts patient care, identifies diagnostic signs and symptoms, may seek technical guidance from an emergency room physician, and administers emergency care.
  • Completes reports of emergency medical responses and patient care.
  • Requests the purchase of medical supplies and equipment within departmental guidelines.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with citizens and co-workers.
  • Answers telephone, responds to citizen questions, and provides information as necessary.
  • Conducts other duties and special projects as requested by superior.
