About The Position

The Paralegal position is part of the Legal Department and reports to the General Counsel. This role involves performing non-manual work directly related to legal, management, and general business operations, requiring discretion and independent judgment on significant matters. The position supports the General Counsel by conducting legal research, drafting documents, managing timelines and case files, assisting with real estate closings, and managing calendars. It also involves resolving routine legal issues, conducting record searches for real estate ownership, analyzing law sources, drafting and reviewing legal documents (including vendor contracts), and interacting with internal clients, courts, vendors, and administrative bodies. The Paralegal will perform substantive legal reviews under attorney supervision, organize and maintain files, and stay informed about developments in areas relevant to the department and electric utilities. Safety and confidentiality are paramount, adhering to established policies. Participation in meetings with valuable feedback is also expected.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or commensurate experience
  • Valid Texas driver's license.
  • Texas Notary Public or willing to become.
  • Must be willing to become certified in CPR, First Aid, AED and Blood-borne pathogens.
  • Familiar with a variety of Texas law-related concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Familiar with litigation processes, easements, utility practices, property rights, contracts, policy formation, bankruptcy, and administrative proceedings.
  • Rely on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
  • May lead and direct the work of others.
  • A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected.
  • Able to multi-task, prioritize multiple assignments, and meet tight deadlines.
  • Work independently, under pressure, in a high-stress environment.
  • Advanced skills in enterprise-wide software applications, including Word, Excel, and Smartsheet.
  • Interpersonal skills that result in effective working relationships with peers, members, and vendors.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and in a positive manner; focused on improvement or problem resolution in a constructive, positive, and professional manner.
  • Ability to learn and understand corporate tariffs, bylaws, charter, policies, and guidelines.
  • Maintain familiarity with the basic techniques of emergency response, including First Aid, CPR, and Bloodborne Pathogens, to be prepared to provide emergency treatment to fellow employees and the public if needed.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct legal research, draft documents, manage timelines and case files, assist with real estate closings, manage calendar and workload.
  • Resolve routine legal issues.
  • Conduct record searches to determine vested ownership of real estate.
  • Research and analyze law sources such as statutes, recorded judicial decisions, legal articles, treaties, constitutions, and legal codes.
  • Draft, review, and finalize legal documents, including but not limited to contracts, easements, correspondence, pleadings, etc., and perform an extensive review of vendor contracts organization-wide.
  • Interact with internal clients, courts, vendors, and administrative bodies.
  • Perform substantive legal reviews under an attorney's supervision.
  • Organize and maintain files.
  • Maintain a general awareness of current developments in areas of interest to the department and electric utilities.
  • Use safe work practices at all times and in all situations.
  • Appropriately handle confidential information and act within the practices established by Bluebonnet Red Flag policy.
  • Participate in meetings as needed and provide valuable feedback.
