Requirements

  • Two - year diploma in a related field such as Legal Assistant or Paralegal plus three years progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office program (Word, Excel,) and Adobe is required.

Responsibilities

  • Providing clear instructions for opening files.
  • Liaising with the client and contacting the named defendants on receipt of new claims.
  • Preparing file summaries.
  • Identify issues on assigned files and conduct legal/topical research.
  • Request, organize and review client records.
  • Independently draft and file legal documents at all levels of court (Court of Justice, Court of King’s Bench, Court of Appeal, potentially Federal Court, Federal Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada).
  • Preparing affidavits of records including redacting relevant and producible records.
  • Serve appropriate documents on opposing parties or arrange service of documents in accordance with the Alberta Rules of Court.
  • Manage and organize files and voluminous records in preparation for complex court proceedings.
  • Assist in drafting and formatting Briefs/Factums and have expertise in procedural requirements for documents being prepared and filed.
  • Preparing lists of undertakings after questioning, liaising with clients and opposing counsel to complete and deliver responses to undertakings.
  • Preparing and maintaining trial binders.
  • Drafting and answering routine correspondence.
  • Uploading necessary records into Prolaw.
  • Close files.
  • Maintain diarization of files to ensure timelines are met.
  • Maintain a current file list.
  • Preparation and distribution of regular case law summaries.
  • Create and contribute to legal databases and precedents.
  • Build and maintain a precedent bank of pleadings, legal opinions, filed written arguments.
  • Any other duties as requested.
