About The Position

The Minnehaha County State's Attorney's Office invites applications for a Paralegal. This position performs paraprofessional legal and administrative support work, including drafting legal documents, conducting legal research, preparing and processing subpoenas, and reviewing and managing tobacco and alcohol sale violations.

Requirements

  • Successful completion of a two-year program in paralegal or legal assistant studies and one year of relevant work experience.
  • Comparable combination of education and experience.
  • Must successfully complete pre-employment background process.
  • Knowledge of legal research and investigation techniques and procedures.
  • Ability to organize and implement complex procedures.
  • Knowledge of and skill in using technology and related software systems.
  • Effective verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to build and maintain positive, collaborative relationships with colleagues, other agencies, and the public.
  • Present a professional appearance and communicate with others in a respectful and approachable way.
  • Possess excellent attention to detail with the ability to multi-task.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Must possess a willingness to learn and exhibit flexibility in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must have the ability to work as part of a team, as well as to work independently.
  • High level of proficiency with Word and Outlook, experience with Excel and PowerPoint.

Responsibilities

  • Provide paralegal support to attorneys by conducting legal research, drafting, reviewing, filing, and tracking legal documents.
  • Manage criminal and civil case files, deadlines, discovery, and court calendars.
  • Prepare trial and hearing materials and assist attorneys during proceedings.
  • Organize, distribute, track, and redact discovery materials across formats.
  • Interview witnesses and victims; prepare summaries; assist with preparation; testify when required.
  • Prepare subpoenas, warrants, and interstate documents; coordinate witness logistics.
  • Research and document criminal histories for case preparation and sentencing.
  • Coordinate with law enforcement, courts, corrections, and victim/witness staff.
  • Maintain templates, reference materials, and case-management data; support reporting and grant documentation.
