About The Position

The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State’s legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland’s 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness. GRADE 12 This position offers a salary range of $52,354 - $74,785, with potential for advancement up to $82,572 based on qualifications, equity, and hiring guidelines. Initial salary offers are determined by qualifications, experience, and available budget, and will not exceed $74,785. LOCATION OF POSITION Office of the Attorney General Department of Human Services 25 South Charles Street Baltimore, Maryland 21201 Main Purpose of Job The OAG is seeking a Paralegal to join its unit within the Department of Human Services (DHS) Trial Litigation Unit. The DHS, operating through 24 local departments of social service offices, is committed to assisting economically vulnerable individuals, providing preventive services, and protecting at-risk children and adults across all of Maryland's 23 counties and Baltimore City. The unit includes a Principal Counsel, four Deputy Principal Counsel, one Assistant Deputy Principal Counsel, two supervising attorneys, fifteen Assistant Attorneys General, a paralegal and five administrative assistants. The P aralegal will support the OAG/DHS unit attorneys with paralegal duties and administrative tasks.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • Three years of experience as a legal assistant or legal secretary performing legal research or preparing legal documents on behalf of an attorney.
  • Thirty credit hours or a certificate in paralegal studies from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience.
  • Thirty credit hours from an accredited law school may be substituted for the required experience.
  • Additional years of experience as stated above may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
  • Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in paralegal specialist classifications or paralegal specialist specialty codes in the legal and kindred field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency with digital evidence management platforms, such as Next Point and/or Relativity
  • Proficiency with MDEC, PACER, court rules and filing requirements
  • Proficiency in case management and document tracking systems.
  • Proficiency with database systems and familiarity with digital evidence management programs.
  • Experience handling confidential or sensitive information in a regulated environment.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Pro application.

Responsibilities

  • Draft and proofread pleadings, subpoenas, affidavits, and legal correspondence
  • Support litigation and discovery by reviewing, organizing, and redacting documents
  • Prepare trial materials, exhibit, and assist with depositions and court proceedings
  • Conduct legal research, cite-checking, and compile case law and regulatory materials
  • Manage case files, databases, and confidential records
  • File pleadings and serve legal documents in compliance with court deadlines
  • Draft, type, and edit pleadings, correspondence, memoranda, affidavits, and exhibits
  • Prepare and maintain boilerplate letters, motions, and standardized legal templates
  • Update and organize boilerplate sections of briefs and memoranda
  • Proofread legal documents and reports for accuracy, clarity, and proper formatting
  • Distribute finalized documents to appropriate individuals and agencies
  • Manage office procedures including scheduling and workflow coordination
  • Prepare weekly summary reports and provide updates to supervisors
