About The Position

The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) is seeking a Paralegal in the Correctional Litigation Unit within the Civil Litigation Division. The Civil Litigation Division defends the State and its employees in state and federal courts and takes strategic legal action on behalf of the State. The Correctional Litigation Unit specifically defends the State against federal lawsuits filed by current and former incarcerated individuals, handling complex litigation concerning constitutional claims and federal statutory violations. The Paralegal will provide direct support to Assistant Attorneys General in this fast-paced environment, enabling attorneys to focus on more complex legal tasks and strategy.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • Three years of experience as a legal assistant or legal secretary performing legal research or preparing legal documents on behalf of an attorney.
  • Strong working knowledge of legal and discovery procedures and documentation in both federal and state courts.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities with precision and efficiency.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
  • Five years of experience as a paralegal or legal assistant, to include legal research and preparing legal documents, preparing discovery materials, and verifying legal citations and references.
  • Experience with e-discovery platforms.
  • Experience with civil case management.
  • Experience with MDEC and PACER filing systems.
  • Knowledge of the rules and procedures of Maryland state and appellate courts, as well as federal courts.

Responsibilities

  • Assist trial attorneys in the preparation and processing of legal documents relating to civil litigation, including motions and memoranda for various courts, deposition and trial exhibits, discovery materials, expert witness reports, appellate briefs, and electronic filings.
  • Establish and maintain an electronic document control system for e-discovery.
  • Manage case files, including organizing documents produced during discovery, memoranda, correspondence, expert reports, deposition testimony, fact-witness diaries and personal records, attorney-client correspondence, attorney work-product, and pleadings.
  • Perform legal and other research relating to civil litigation.
  • Analyze documents and select, summarize, and characterize specific information pertaining to case issues, including abstracting depositions, preparing medical chronologies, assembling fact-witness files, and preparing case chronologies.
