About The Position

This exciting employment opportunity is with the Oregon Department of Corrections at the Oregon State Correctional Institution (OSCI) in Salem, Oregon. This position is represented by American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). This position may be eligible for Police & Fire (P&F) benefits through Public Employees Retirement System (PERS), as defined by statute. The Painter coordinates, instructs, and trains skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled adults in custody (AICs) in the operation, maintenance, and repair of facility systems, equipment, and building structures within a correctional institution. This position also performs journey-level painting and related trades work as outlined in the duties below.

Requirements

  • Completed painter apprenticeship training and be a journey worker; OR Three (3) years of varied painting experience.
  • Possess a valid Oregon Driver’s License.
  • Experience working in a correctional, institutional, or industrial setting.
  • Experience supervising, leading, or training individuals in a structured work environment, including assigning tasks and monitoring performance.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate workflow, prioritize assignments, and ensure timely completion of projects.
  • Knowledge of safety regulations, risk management practices, and proper use of tools, equipment, and materials related to painting and surface coatings.
  • Skilled in facility maintenance and repair, including drywall preparation, painting, and general surface finishing techniques.
  • Experience maintaining inventory, controlling tools and equipment, and ensuring accountability in secure or regulated environments.
  • Ability to maintain accurate documentation, including logs, reports, and time records.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to provide clear direction, foster teamwork, and maintain accountability in a team setting.
  • Knowledge of CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management system).
  • Knowledge of security procedures, including contraband control, searches, and maintaining a safe and orderly work area.
  • Must pass a Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) fingerprint-based background check and maintain CJIS eligibility.
  • Must complete an I-9 and confirm authorization to work in the United States within three days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates, instructs, and trains skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled adults in custody (AICs) in the operation, maintenance, and repair of facility systems, equipment, and building structures within a correctional institution.
  • Performs journey-level painting and related trades work.
  • Assigns tasks and monitors performance of adults in custody.
  • Coordinates workflow, prioritizes assignments, and ensures timely completion of projects.
  • Maintains inventory, controls tools and equipment, and ensures accountability in secure or regulated environments.
  • Maintains accurate documentation, including logs, reports, and time records.
  • Provides clear direction, fosters teamwork, and maintains accountability in a team setting.
  • Prevents escapes from confinement by proper control of keys, tools, and contraband.
  • Documents unusual incidents as they occur.
  • Responds to call backs in the event of an emergency and may be placed in any post in the institution.
