About The Position

The Packaging Machine Operator, under general supervision, is responsible for the safe, efficient, and continuous operation of snack packaging machinery. This role involves monitoring production schedules, maintaining machinery, ensuring adequate supplies, adjusting machine settings, and performing setups, changeovers, and cleaning. The operator will also monitor product quality, account for product run-off, maintain a clean work area, and report any maintenance issues. This position may also involve leadership on the packaging line, acting as a backup Packaging Coordinator, monitoring seasoning levels, and performing other duties as required. Mandatory overtime may be required.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 1-year production experience in a manufacturing environment required
  • Must be able to comply with the physical demands of constantly lifting and moving stock by hand or with manual equipment (including pallet jacks and forklifts).
  • Ability to lift 40+ lbs. on a regular basis, and occasionally be able to lift/move more than 50+ lbs. with mechanical or peer assistance.

Responsibilities

  • Safely, efficiently, and continuously operate snack packaging machinery.
  • Read production schedules and plan accordingly.
  • Maintain the operation of packaging machinery by monitoring codes, dates, and prices.
  • Ensure an adequate supply of roll stock and all packaging materials are available for each machine.
  • Adjust machine micro logic set-up as needed to maintain an efficient and low waste operation.
  • Perform machine setups, changeovers, proper running, procedural adjustments, sanitation cleanup, and shutdown.
  • Plan ahead for machine changeovers and efficiently change from one product item to another.
  • Monitor and adjust each machine to ensure proper cut off of film and that bags have proper end seals and back seals.
  • Ensure machines are running at standard speeds.
  • Monitor and check weights and product appearance as required.
  • Properly account for product run off and handle this product accordingly; sort through and rework all good product.
  • Keep machines and work areas clean, wipe packaging machines off, and blow down the area when required.
  • Immediately report any maintenance problems to the Maintenance Mechanic or Supervisor.
  • Practice and adhere to appropriate safety and hygiene guidelines/procedures for safe housekeeping and personal protection.
  • Store supplies in designated areas.
  • Keep work area aisles/exits clear and free from obstruction; remove trash from work area floor.
  • Follow instructions for safe lifting/carrying of various sizes, shapes, and weights.
  • Identify and report issues with equipment.
  • Report all job-related injuries to supervision.
  • Provide leadership and direction to the entire packaging line.
  • May be qualified to perform as Back-up Packaging Coordinator, or other technical/skilled position.
  • If applicable, may monitor and replenish seasoning on overhead to ensure proper seasoning coverage on product.
  • Perform other duties as required.
