About The Position

A Carter Lumber Outside Sales Representative's work is primarily focused on creating and maintaining relationships within the booming building materials industry. This role offers an opportunity to make connections and communicate effectively while working for a multi-billion-dollar, family-owned company that has been in business since 1932. Sales Representatives collaborate with various departments, including the Yard, dispatch office, middle management, and marketing Vice Presidents. The core responsibility is to find and complete sales of building materials and installed services with local contractors, builders, and remodelers. Beyond selling, representatives must manage sold projects and customer relationships, stay updated on customer product use and trends, visit job sites, maintain schedules, and resolve issues. Success requires proven sales strategies, commitment, follow-through, and strong communication skills. The position offers a salary plus commission with unlimited earning potential.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in building materials outside sales
  • Knowledge of home building basics
  • Ability to work independently
  • Strong planning and organizational skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Office suite

Responsibilities

  • Finding and completing sales of building materials and installed services with local contractors, builders, and remodelers.
  • Managing sold projects and customer relationships.
  • Collecting and keeping up-to-date information on customers’ product use and trends.
  • Visiting job sites as needed.
  • Maintaining schedules.
  • Resolving issues.
  • Creating material estimates/quotes and special orders.
  • Opening new accounts on a monthly/quarterly basis.
  • Learning to read blueprints and provide material take off lists.
  • Attending HBA/builder/company functions as required.
