Outside Plant Engineer III

Astreya•Denver, CO

About The Position

The Outside Plant Engineer III supports OSP fiber operations and engineering in data center or telecommunications infrastructure environments. The role reviews OSP designs for buildability and execution risk, develops and approves splice matrices and cut plans for live infrastructure, and provides operational support to field crews during installations, turn-ups, cross-connect delivery, and migration cutovers. The engineer validates fiber test results and leads troubleshooting, audits case records, maintains accurate documentation and system-of-record entries, coordinates with internal teams and vendors, and provides technical leadership through mentoring and process improvement.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of experience in OSP fiber operations or OSP engineering within data center or telecom infrastructure environments.
  • OSP engineering background, with senior-level ability to read, interpret, and validate OSP designs, splice matrices, and construction drawings.
  • Prior hands-on fusion and mechanical splicing experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of fiber cable types, splice closures, patch panel architectures, and cross-connect fields.
  • Demonstrated ownership of splice matrices, cut sheets, and cut plans in live, in-service environments.
  • Advanced OTDR analysis skills, including bidirectional traces, event classification, loss budgets, and fault localization.
  • Fluency with GIS and fiber management platforms.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a data center OSP operations environment within a hyperscaler, cloud provider, or large-scale data center operator.
  • Experience with carrier hand-off migrations, such as MMV to MMH or similar, and in-service infrastructure cutovers.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge of ROADM/DWDM transport and the interaction between OSP decisions and the optical layer.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret OSP designs for buildability and execution risk.
  • Prepare and sign off on splice matrices, cut sheets, and cut plans that account for in-service traffic, maintenance windows, and rollback paths.
  • Serve as the operations point of contact for field splicing and installation crews during turn-ups, cross-connect delivery, and migration cutovers.
  • Make real-time engineering decisions when field conditions deviate from the plan.
  • Validate field test results, including OTDR, OLTS, VFL, and inspection results.
  • Lead turn-up troubleshooting using bidirectional OTDR analysis, loss budget validation, and fault localization.
  • Review case audit sheets, reconcile findings against splice matrices, path records, and GIS, and drive remediation.
  • Maintain accurate as-builts, splice documentation, and system-of-record entries.
  • Coordinate with design engineering, construction, splicing vendors, network engineering, and operations to deliver turn-ups across programs.
  • Report project status and completion to project stakeholders.
  • Mentor junior operations engineers.
  • Author MOPs, SOPs, and job aids.
  • Drive standards and process improvement across the team.
