About The Position

We’re looking for an Outside Patrol Worker to support our Shelter program at Calgary Alpha House Society. If you have a valid Security Guard license, a calm and compassionate demeanor, enjoy working outside, and have a passion for supporting vulnerable populations, this is the job for you. As an Outside Patrol Worker at Alpha House, you will work within our protocols and procedures to ensure clients, staff, and the general public feel safe and secure in the vicinity of the shelter.

Requirements

  • Alberta Basic Security Training Certificate and licensed through Alberta Justice
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in security or a related position
  • Standard First Aid, Level C CPR, and AED certification
  • A high level of self-awareness and emotional intelligence
  • Proven ability to remain calm under pressure, manage crises, and build rapport
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, showing respect, dignity, and discretion while maintaining confidentiality
  • A well-developed sense of diplomacy, conflict resolution, and de-escalation skills
  • A compassionate and non-judgmental approach towards individuals struggling with addictions and mental health challenges
  • A team player with strong oral and written English communication skills
  • A thorough understanding and appreciation of the Protection of Persons in Care Act
  • Alberta Security License
  • Able to provide a Vulnerable Sector Search, valid within the last six months, that does not contain any results material to the position
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including standing and walking for large portions of the shift
  • Steel-toed footwear
  • Computer literacy, including proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook

  • Preference for those with experience and knowledge of addictions, mental health, and the unhoused

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a highly visible and reassuring presence while promoting appropriate behavior and protecting the welfare of clients, staff, volunteers, and members of the public at or near the shelter.
  • Enforce rules and regulations in and around the premises with a communication style rooted in respect and dignity.
  • Conduct regular patrols of the area to deter criminal and undesired activity, loitering, identify safety hazards, and respond to security incidents.
  • Monitor and control access to the shelter, greeting and assisting partners and the public, and ensuring a warm handoff to the appropriate staff or program.
  • When necessary, escort unruly individuals out of the area or detain them for police or emergency services.
  • Foster and maintain excellent relationships with community partners by checking in with businesses, actively building community connections, and responding to concerns in a timely manner.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with the highest professional standards and project a professional image of self, the security department, and the agency.
  • Respond to emergency situations such as fire alarms, medical emergencies, overdoses, and security-related incidents, providing appropriate assistance as needed.
  • Maintain accurate logs and records of all incidents, accidents, and other activities, writing and submitting reports as required.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards (MSDS, OH&S, WHMIS, etc.), including assisting in maintaining the cleanliness of the outside of the building.
  • Contribute to team efforts by accomplishing other related responsibilities as needed.
