About The Position

Chesterfield Public Library is seeking an Outreach Librarian to join its team of innovative, forward-thinking professionals committed to delivering engaging information services to a vibrant and appreciative community. The Outreach Librarian will receive and seek out outreach requests from the community and collaborate with library staff to fulfill those requests. They will represent the library at outreach events, leading programs and promoting library services to the community. This role will also provide communication support during outreach opportunities and develop support materials for outreach events, suggesting and developing materials based on the audience. The Outreach Librarian will build relationships and partnerships within the community to create opportunities for the library to participate in community events. They will provide service at information desks or outreach events, offering professional information research and readers’ advisory services using traditional and electronic resources. This position will coordinate with strategic plan goal champions on outreach goals and initiatives and assist in executing outreach related elements of the strategic plan. The Outreach Librarian will supervise the part-time Outreach Specialist and operate the customized library outreach vehicle (training provided), outreach van, and other county vehicles. They will handle and secure confidential information and perform other duties as required. This position is part of an approved Career Development Plan (CDP) and offers career progression opportunities and salary incentives, as funding permits, based on performance, qualifications, and experience.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Library and/or Information Science from a graduate program accredited by the American Library Association (ALA).
  • Possession of, or the ability to obtain prior to employment, a Librarian’s Professional Certificate issued by the Library of Virginia.
  • At least one year of related experience (professional library experience or experience in a public library preferred).
  • One year of outreach, program development, implementation, and evaluation experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers to gather information and provide outreach support.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing, with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Working knowledge of the principles and practices of library and information science.
  • Strong writing skills; attention to detail and accuracy; ability to work independently and meet deadlines; strong critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and related software, including database applications.
  • Ability to operate office equipment such as scanners, copiers, laptops, and tablets.
  • Current valid driver’s license and good driving record required.
  • Based on the Virginia DMV point system, records must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months.
  • Out-of-state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview.
  • Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date.
  • Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.
