About The Position

This position is for an Outpatient Registered Nurse who will float between units. The role involves prescribing, delegating, and coordinating nursing care using the nursing process. The nurse will provide leadership by collaborating with ancillary departments and patient care team members to maintain standards of clinical practice and patient care. Responsibilities include participating in Quality Improvement initiatives, patient/family teaching, and discharge planning. The nurse will direct, supervise, and evaluate nursing care, lead decision-making at the unit level, and assign nursing care based on patient needs and staff competencies. Core and specific skills must be performed competently. The role also includes providing unit-based education annually, administering medications with knowledge of their actions and contraindications, implementing physician orders, and utilizing assessment skills to identify patient and family needs. Communication of unit activities, staffing fluctuations, and difficult situations is crucial. The nurse will make patient rounds with physicians, assist with diagnostic tests, identify learning opportunities, and promote good public relations for the nursing department and hospital. A key responsibility includes the safe and effective administration of oncology chemotherapy, understanding its mechanism of action, administration, dosage calculation, and contraindications.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an approved school of nursing
  • Possess current licensure by Missouri State Nursing Board
  • BLS training
  • Must have the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
  • Must be able to lift approximately 50lbs.
  • Majority of shift spent standing.
  • Considerable amount of time spent walking.
  • Must use good body mechanics to independently lift or in certain situations, assist with lifting/transferring a patient.
  • Must have ability to read physician orders and observe patient care areas; utilize inspection skills during patient assessment.
  • Must be able to receive/comprehend telephone calls; auscultate and percuss during physical assessment.
  • Talking is essential in instructing and supervising nursing personnel, communicating physician orders and addressing patient/family needs and/or requests.

  • Previous nursing experience preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provides one unit based education to staff annually.
  • Competently administers medications with knowledge of action, mode of administration, side effects, and contraindications.
  • Implements, transcribes, and/or countersigns physician orders.
  • Utilizes assessment skills to identify biophysical, psychosocial, environmental, selfcare, discharge planning, spiritual and educational needs of patient, family, and/or significant other.
  • Communicates pertinent unit activities, work load fluctuations/staffing, and difficult situations.
  • Makes patient rounds with physicians and assists with diagnostic tests and procedures.
  • Identifies learning opportunities for self and others.
  • Promotes good public relations for the nursing department/hospital.
  • Competently assumes an active role in the safe, effective administration of oncology chemotherapy, understands mechanism of action, modes of administration, dosage calculation and contraindication.
