About The Position

Works under the direction of the PSM in assisting the Pediatric Ophthalmologist and Optometrist, and nurses in the Pediatric Specialty Center performing a variety of tasks and procedures necessary in determining patients' diagnosis and treatment. Under supervision, demonstrates technical expertise and clinical judgement by applying problem solving techniques, integrating advanced skills and knowledge base into clinical practice. Is knowledgeable about and supports the philosophy, policies and general standards of practice at YNHCH.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Successful completion of JCAHPO approved program for Ophthalmic Assistants/technicians
  • At least one year as an Ophthalmic Assistant or tech, including experience with pediatric patients
  • Certified as an ophthalmic technician
  • Maintains certification requirements every 3 yrs as per JCAHPO.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with pediatric patients and families, providers and members of the health care team

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for accurately preparing patients' past medical history with knowledge of anatomy and physiology. Possesses sufficient knowledge base regarding systemic disease and its effect on the visual apparatus to obtain an accurate history. Applies accurate technical intervention as needed by each individual patient.
  • Consistently obtains and records patients' chief complaints documenting history of current illness. Includes signs and symptoms, injuries and refractive needs.
  • Maintains and Supports Patient Flow through consistent communication with providers, nurses, and registration staff, and patient/families
  • Ensures patients are scheduled appropriately according to provider's request, ensuring procedures and diagnostic needs
  • Accurately obtains and records visual acuity and performs lensometry
  • Performs visual assessment and documents including: visual acuity incuding distance and near on children, and other visual testing as needed
  • Demonstrates ability to accurately perform and document tonometry
  • Performs applicatopn and indentation tonometry safely and accurately. Documents appropriately.
  • Demonstrates safe application of eye dressings, eye gtts, and ointments
  • Is knowledgable and remains up to date on appropriate eye dressings, immobilization patches and shields
  • Maintains Environment and supplies
  • Ensures exam room, and all equipment are cleaned as per policy, between each patient encounter
  • Maitains ongoing profiessional development through continued COT certification requirments within JCAHPO, including participation in ongoing educational opportunities within Dept, state, and national organizations
