About The Position

The Outdoor Program Specialist position is On-Call and does not qualify for benefits. Make a positive impact in the lives of at-risk youth in our community. The Outdoor Program Specialist serves a key role in supporting probation youth in Douglas County's Outdoor Behavioral Health Program, which helps to promote their personal growth, responsibility, and positive decision-making all while exploring the outdoors of our beautiful community. The right individual for the position will be someone with dedication to and experience working with this unique group of juveniles, and someone who is committed to helping the Juvenile Probation Department achieve its mission to reduce delinquent behavior among youth through targeted interventions. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to random and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.

Requirements

  • High School diploma/GED; and one (1) year of experience working with at risk youth OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age at date of employment.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • First Aid and CPR certification, within two (2) months of date of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the Outdoor Behavioral Health Program supervisor with juveniles in adventure-based programs, community service, trail work and other community-based events including overnight trips.
  • Communicates with "on-call" staff responsible for proper radio communication with Douglas County Dispatch.
  • Performs a variety of clerical duties including, but not limited to, filing and answering phones, documenting activities and contacts, completing reports as appropriate and necessary, utilizing computer software programs.
  • Follows the directives given by the Outdoor Behavior Health Program Supervisor/Senior Juvenile Probation Officer.
  • Works under pressure, exercises good judgment and makes sound and timely decisions in emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Assists with various outdoor activities including, but not limited to, kayaking, rock-climbing, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, snow camping, backpacking, avalanche training, snowboarding, adventure challenge course and wilderness survival.
  • Monitors and maintains the safety of juveniles during transportation in the Outdoor Education Program.
  • Drives a motor vehicle and transport juveniles to specified locations.
  • Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
  • Contributes effectively to the accomplishment of team or work unit goals, objectives, and activities.
