About The Position

St. Francis Xavier University (StFX) is seeking applicants to fill a critical role as an outdoor education assistant. As the Certificate in Outdoor Education (COE) and the Master in Outdoor Education expands with new cohorts, StFX requires an individual to support these programs as a program equipment manager and as an in-field support for the instructor. The ideal candidate should have prior experience working in wilderness-remote settings and have a skill set (current certification: Wilderness and Remote First Aid, Paddle Canada Canoeing, Paddle Canada Kayaking, or NASP – Basic Archery) that would position them as competent in several outdoor pursuits: canoeing; kayaking; cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, archery, mountain biking, stand-up paddle boarding, navigation (map & compass, GPS), core camping, hiking, and backpacking. The candidate should demonstrate a willingness to participate in related training, a commitment to a growth plan that would provide for more involvement in each component of the outdoor programs offered by StFX. The candidate would ideally have an ability and understanding of required gear maintenance and aid in course preparations and wrap-up. Periodically, the candidate would be required to perform long-term equipment preparations and repairs. Due to the nature of these outdoor education programs, there is an expectation for weekend work, as an extension of preparations during the week before and after each course. The hours for this part time job will vary:, 3-5 hours per week prior to a scheduled course, 3-5 hours per week post course, and potentially 0 – 5 hours between the course schedules. The candidate will be expected to be part of the course offering on weekends – approximately 33 hours.
