The state supported living centers serve people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who are medically fragile or who have behavioral problems. The centers provide campus-based direct services and supports at 13 centers located throughout the state. Orthopedic Equipment Tech II - Designs, manufactures, and modifies orthopedic equipment including welding, upholstery, and working with plastics, as required by the Habilitative Services Dept. Varying from moderate to complex levels of orthopedic construction. This work will also involve planning, scheduling, and processing paperwork. May be asked to train others as needed and assume some Supervisory duties from time to time in the absence of the Director.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or GED, plus one (1) year of work-related experience in the maintenance or modification of adaptive equipment or one (1) year commensurate experience in the field of welding construction and metal fabrication.
  • Knowledge of Orthopedic equipment manufacture and maintenance work.
  • Knowledge of the qualities of various materials used in the fabrication of adaptive equipment, which include welding, upholstery, and working with plastics.
  • Knowledge in the use of a wide range of handheld and power tools used in the manufacture of adaptive equipment.
  • The ability to train (and/or) supervise others, prepare specifications, plan and organize time, and to prepare concise and timely reports.
  • Position may be required to drive and require a valid Driver’s License and eligible driving record based on HHSC Fleet Management policy.
  • Applicants with an out-of-state driver’s license must provide an original certified driving record from the state of driving licensure or obtain a valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aide, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct and HHS List of Excluded Individuals/ Entities (LEIE).
  • Males between the ages of 18 – 25 must be registered with the Selective Service.
  • All State Supported Living Center Employees are subject to Random Drug Testing.
  • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state-operated facility.

Nice To Haves

  • An understanding of anatomical terminology a plus.
  • Experience in upholstery work preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Designs, manufactures, and modifies orthopedic equipment including welding, upholstery, and working with plastics, as required by the Habilitative Services Department.
  • Planning, scheduling, and processing paperwork.
  • Repair orthotics equipment.
  • On call service when scheduled.
  • Train others as needed.
  • Ability to lift 70 lbs.
  • Manufactures customized, modified, and adaptive equipment.
  • Measures individuals with disabilities using adaptive measuring devices.
  • Conducts fitting of adaptive equipment.
  • Participates in designing and preparing plans and specifications for custom and adaptive equipment.
  • Assists in planning programs for the manufacture and the preventive maintenance of modified and customized adaptive equipment or orthopedic devices.
  • May coordinate production, maintenance, and repair programs.
  • May train others.
