About The Position

The Ortho Nurse at Good Samaritan Hospital provides orthopedic post-operative care on a 22-bed unit that cares for a variety of orthopedic patients and is Joint Commission Certified in total hip and total knee replacements. The unit provides advanced orthopedic procedures in Kearney, Nebraska. The nurse builds trust with patients and families by anticipating needs, observing closely, and listening carefully. The role works collaboratively with surgical and nursing teams and attends to patients’ emotional and informational needs, helping them feel safe and supported during recovery. The nurse welcomes new patients, ensures they have medication for post-operative pain management, and educates patients and families about care during their hospital stay and at home. Good Samaritan Hospital is a 268-bed regional referral center in Kearney, Nebraska, offering a range of services including trauma care, cardiac care, neonatal intensive care, cancer care, neurosurgery, orthopedics, and mental health services.

Requirements

Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
Active RN license in Nebraska or a nurse license compact.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association.

Responsibilities

Provide orthopedic post-operative care to patients.
Anticipate patient needs, observe patients closely, and listen carefully to build trust with patients and families.
Communicate details and coordinate care with the surgical and nursing teams.
Address patients’ emotional and informational needs during recovery.
Comfort patients who are nervous or confused after surgery and help them feel safe and relaxed.
Welcome new patients and ensure they have medication needed to manage post-operative pain.
Inform patients and families about care during the hospital stay and at home.
