The Organ Procurement Specialist (OPS) supports the complex organ donation process by educating operating room staff and surgeons and providing guidance on organ recovery procedures. The role is responsible for packaging, labeling, and caring for organs after recovery, and for coordinating, facilitating, and managing the recovery process. OPS staff collaborate and communicate with multiple teams and hospital personnel under tight timeframes, using a variety of systems and phone work. The role also offers opportunities to develop advanced practice skills, including recovering research organs, cleaning arterial cuffs for perfusion, recovering kidney biopsies, and assisting surgeons. The schedule includes 13 twelve-hour on-call night shifts (7 p.m.–7 a.m.) and two 24-hour on-call shifts per month. Shifts are self-scheduled and include weekend requirements. Twelve-hour on-call shifts may extend longer. The position serves Colorado and most of Wyoming, a broad geographical service area.
