The Organ Preservation Coordinator at LifeShare Carolinas, a part of Advocate Health, is a full-time role with a variable schedule. This critical position involves the aseptic recovery of various human tissues and organs, including eyes, bones, ligaments, tendons, heart for valves, saphenous vessels, and skin, strictly adhering to departmental policies and procedures. Key responsibilities include coordinating the entire process of organ recovery, preservation, and transportation. The coordinator performs organ preservation using specialized machines, which involves cannulating and placing organs on preservation machines as approved by the surgical director, and conducting in-situ flushes. The role also encompasses performing donor evaluations, managing logistics for recovery teams, and maintaining essential communication with Medical Examiners, Nursing Supervisors, and Funeral Directors. Ensuring that all recovered organs and tissues are packaged according to policy and meet regulatory requirements is paramount. Additionally, the coordinator is responsible for the decontamination and sterilization of all LifeShare instruments used in recovery and for maintaining the Organ, Tissue, and Eye Labs, ensuring adequate supply levels. This position requires significant travel, often over long distances, and the ability to work effectively in diverse hospital environments, including travel by air and ambulance, and involves irregular sleep patterns due to the nature of organ recovery.
