About The Position

The Bridgeport Port Jefferson Ferry, a trusted maritime transportation provider since 1883, is seeking highly qualified individuals to join their team as Ordinary Seaman. This position is for credentialed mariners living in the vicinity of Port Jefferson, NY, with scheduled shifts of 3 days on and 3 days off. The role involves a live-aboard component for 3 days at a time, ensuring a safe, reliable, and enjoyable ferry experience for passengers transiting the Long Island Sound barrier.

Requirements

Current U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential with Ordinary Seaman (OS) rating.
Valid Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).
High school diploma or equivalent.
Pass pre-employment drug test.
Pass pre-employment physical.
Entry level position; however, prior deck experience aboard a commercial or non-commercial vessel is a plus.

Responsibilities

Serve as lookout.
Handle lines to and from the vessel during operations under the direction of the Officer in Charge of the Navigation Watch; secure vessel to dock.
Direct vehicles on and off the vessel.
Assist the Mate and AB in the inspection of lifesaving, firefighting, and all other safety equipment to ensure all are in working order.
Assist passengers who require assistance on and off the vessel.
Participate in all training, drills and exercises.
Perform assigned firefighting, man overboard and abandon ship duties as assigned on the Station Bill.
Perform painting, cleaning and maintenance duties as assigned by the Captain or Mate; general upkeep of the vessel.
Project a positive company image to customers, other mariners, terminal personnel and the public.
Perform other duties as may be assigned by the Mate or Captain.
