About The Position

The Bridgeport Port Jefferson Ferry is hiring an Ordinary Seaman (OS), an entry-level position for credentialed mariners who live near Port Jefferson, New York. The schedule is three days on and three days off, with the employee living aboard the vessel during each three-day work period. The Ordinary Seaman is responsible to the Captain at all times and reports to the Officer in Charge of the Navigation when on duty. The role supports safe vessel operations and passenger service through lookout duties, line handling, vehicle direction, safety-equipment inspections, and assistance to passengers. It also includes participation in training and emergency drills, assigned emergency-response duties, and vessel cleaning, painting, maintenance, and general upkeep. Other duties may be assigned by the Mate or Captain. The listed daily rate is $393.64 per scheduled shift. The position is classified as exempt. Requirements

Current U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential with Ordinary Seaman (OS) rating.
Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
High school diploma or equivalent.
Pass a pre-employment drug test.
Pass a pre-employment physical.
Live in the vicinity of Port Jefferson, New York.
Have adequate vision, with no color blindness or impairment that cannot be corrected with prescription lenses.
Have adequate hearing.
Be capable of walking and standing on wet surfaces for extended periods.
Be able to handle heavy lines and operate heavy machinery.
Be able to climb a 12-foot ladder without assistance.
Be able to hoist oneself up and over a 12-inch-wide, 6-foot-high barrier.
Be able to lift 100 pounds from deck to waist level, 50 pounds from deck to shoulder level, and 35 pounds from deck to overhead.
Be able to pull or drag 120 pounds at least 20 feet.

Prior deck experience aboard a commercial or non-commercial vessel.

Responsibilities

Serve as lookout.
Handle lines to and from the vessel during operations as directed by the Officer in Charge of the Navigation Watch, and secure the vessel to the dock.
Direct vehicles on and off the vessel.
Assist the Mate and AB in inspecting lifesaving, firefighting, and other safety equipment to ensure it is in working order.
Assist passengers who require help getting on and off the vessel.
Participate in training, drills, and exercises.
Perform assigned firefighting, man-overboard, and abandon-ship duties on the Station Bill.
Perform painting, cleaning, maintenance, and general vessel upkeep as assigned by the Captain or Mate.
Project a positive company image to customers, other mariners, terminal personnel, and the public.
Perform other duties assigned by the Mate or Captain.
