About The Position

UCSF recently transitioned from a heavily customized PeopleSoft environment to Oracle HCM Cloud. This role is responsible for configuring, stabilizing, and maturing the new platform. The engineer acts as a translator between HR/Payroll operations and IT, ensuring business needs are met through sustainable Oracle Cloud configuration—not customizations. The engineer must challenge legacy thinking, guide stakeholders toward standardized Oracle Cloud processes, and maintain system integrity through quarterly releases and ongoing optimization.

Requirements

  • Oracle HCM Cloud functional configuration experience.
  • Hands-on configuration skills (not advisory-only).
  • Strong understanding of HR processes, workflows, and data dependencies.
  • Ability to reason through cross-module impacts and system behavior.
  • Excellent communication skills, including executive-facing clarity.
  • Comfortable challenging stakeholders and guiding them toward sustainable solutions.
  • Oracle HCM Cloud configuration tools.
  • HDL (HCM Data Loader) for mass updates, data fixes, and corrections.
  • OTBI for operational and ad hoc reporting.
  • Working understanding of workflows and security frameworks.

Nice To Haves

  • PeopleSoft familiarity (helpful but not required).
  • Experience in large, complex enterprises.
  • Exposure to healthcare, higher education, or regulated environments.
  • Experience working with multiple peer systems and partial legacy coexistence.

Responsibilities

  • Configure and support Oracle HCM Cloud modules (Core HR, Absence, Recruiting, Compensation, Security).
  • Design and maintain: Job & position structures, Legal employers & work relationships, Eligibility profiles & rules, Workflows & approvals, Security roles & data access.
  • Own workflow design to ensure alignment with HR intent and enterprise dependencies.
  • Troubleshoot configuration-driven issues by tracing upstream data and understanding downstream impacts.
  • Support HR and Payroll users when system behavior differs from expectations.
  • Validate data after conversions, production fixes, and quarterly patches.
  • Review and interpret Oracle's quarterly releases.
  • Assess impacts to existing configuration and workflows.
  • Distinguish between: True system defects, Expected Oracle behavior, Gaps caused by legacy process assumptions.
  • Maintain awareness of how Oracle HCM interacts with PeopleSoft, supply chain, research, and financial systems.
  • Understand upstream/downstream data flows.
  • Support integrations through HCM Extracts, BI tools, and data validation.
  • Partner with HR leadership, Payroll, IT, and other engineers.
  • Communicate clearly with executives and business stakeholders.
  • Explain configuration decisions in business terms.
  • Push back on requests that replicate legacy customization or violate Oracle Cloud best practices.
