About The Position

At AEG, the Optometric Technician works alongside Optometrists to support patient care and education, helping provide an efficient, high-quality experience. The role conducts preliminary testing, assists with specialty diagnostic testing, completes post-exam tasks, and manages appointment scheduling. It also supports patient records and medical documentation, contact lens services, practice organization, and other duties as requested.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
• PC skills, including Microsoft Office, Windows, and word processing.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills for professional collaboration with coworkers and patients.
• Experience evaluating patients for eye exams and dispensing eye-exam medications.
• Familiarity with medical terminology associated with eye treatment.
• Experience maintaining patient records in accordance with HIPAA regulations.

Nice To Haves

• Industry certification such as CPO, CPOA, or CPOT.

Responsibilities

• Perform preliminary patient evaluations before the Optometrist’s examination, including dilation, topical and diagnostic medications, Optomap, autorefractor testing, and visual acuity.
• Interview patients before their visit to identify medical issues and reasons for the visit, and provide relevant details to the Optometrist.
• Schedule ophthalmology referrals, diagnostic follow-up visits, and other specialty referrals when required, and complete related paperwork.
• Maintain patient records in compliance with company, federal, and state policies, including HIPAA.
• Respond to patient telephone inquiries about medication, treatment, and problems, referring questions to the Optometrist as necessary.
• Perform specialty diagnostic testing when required, using equipment such as OCT, Visual Field, Pachymetry, and Retinal Camera devices.
• Document medical findings and communications between the Optometrist and patient in the EHR, and assist with clerical medical documentation duties at participating practices.
• Check CPT codes and billing for post-operative care, office visits, and other services.
• Support maximum appointment-schedule utilization through appointment confirmations, recall outreach, and contacting patients who missed or canceled appointments to reschedule.
• Teach contact lens insertion and removal, manage contact lens trial inventory, check in patients, and take contact lens orders in person or by phone.
• Complete end-of-day tasks, including opti-schedule wrap-up and the end-of-day checklist.
• Clean and organize frame boards, displays, mirrors, the workbench, and office areas to maintain practice cleanliness and visual appeal.
• Act as a scribe for the Optometrist or perform refractions when requested.
• Perform other duties within the practice as requested.
