About The Position

BJ's Wholesale Club is seeking an Optical Manager to lead and manage the optical department. This role involves performing optician duties alongside managerial responsibilities, including managing, teaching, and coaching the optical team, interacting with members, confirming appointments, and maintaining the department. The Optical Manager acts as a liaison between members and the lab to ensure timely order processing. The position also involves driving sales, achieving metric goals, and ensuring excellent member service. The Optical Manager is expected to exhibit strategic thinking, lead through change, communicate effectively, build high-performing teams, and deliver results. They will be responsible for teaching, coaching, and leading team members through the club's training process, fostering a culture of development, ethical decision-making, and engagement. Ensuring a safe and positive environment for both team members and members, embracing inclusion and diversity, and acknowledging team member success are key aspects of the role. The manager must also guarantee service excellence, set service standards, and empower the team to resolve member concerns. Daily commitment to GOLD Member Standards (Greet, Anticipate, Appreciate) and GOLD Club Standards (Grand opening look, stocked items, planograms executed, visible signage, clean and organized) is required. The role also demands a deep knowledge of key metrics and reporting for department performance, using this data to drive performance and profitability, and communicating the connection between operational performance and financial targets to the team.

Requirements

  • Minimum of two years’ experience in a retail Optical setting.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities, including managing/supervising cross-functional teams, training team members, and driving and communicating results.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Attention to detail required.
  • Open shift availability required.
  • At least 18 years of age.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of optical products and business practices.
  • High school diploma, college degree, and/or big box wholesale, retail, optical, and/or management experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Performing all duties required of an optician, in addition to managerial duties.

  • Keeping the department clean and organized.
  • Acquiring a deep knowledge of key metrics and reporting for total club and department performance.
  • Driving performance and profitability by using reporting to identify trends and areas of opportunity.
  • Identifying breakdowns in process and correcting them before they negatively impact club performance metrics.
  • Communicating a simple message to the team on the connection between consistent operational performance and achieving club financial targets.
  • Providing a high level of Member service, including answering incoming calls, scheduling patients for eye exams, maintaining honest communication, and a friendly demeanor.
  • Supporting Members in making eyeglass adjustments, taking measurements, reading prescriptions on the lensometer, timely notification of product readiness, proper handling of money transactions, and completing paperwork for orders.
  • Managing Optical department team members and ensuring diligent engagement with Members in person and over the phone.
  • Maintaining a high degree of discretion and adhering to all privacy and confidential company policies and procedures (HIPAA).
  • Managing all sales opening and closing procedures at the end of the shift.
  • Ensuring accurate funds are collected and payments are made at the point of service.
  • Striving to deliver sales and metric goals by educating patients on product benefits and recommending products to improve visual needs.
  • Spending downtime engaging with members in front of Optical.
  • Communicating and following up with Club Manager and Regional Optical Manager regarding department performance, maintenance, team member performance, and doctor relations.
  • Ensuring the workstation/Optical department is maintained and clean at all times.
  • Supervising all team members in the Optical department, including training, separations, recommendations for promotions, and coaching.
  • Maintaining all club policies and procedures.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
  • Ensuring regular, predictable, full attendance.
