About The Position

BJ’s Wholesale Club is seeking a Licensed Optical Manager to perform all duties of an optician, in addition to managerial responsibilities. This role involves managing, teaching, and coaching optical team members, interacting with members, confirming appointments, and maintaining the department. The Optical Manager acts as the liaison between members and the lab to ensure timely order processing. The advertised pay range does not include additional compensation from our Manager Bonus and spiff programs. This position requires leadership through strategic thinking, sound decision-making, and effective communication, building high-performing teams, and driving business results. Team members will be taught, coached, and led through the club level training process, fostering a culture of development, ethical decision-making, and engagement. Members will receive excellent service, with team members empowered to resolve concerns. The role also involves leading teams to deliver daily club standards, maintaining a clean and organized department, and understanding key metrics to drive performance and profitability. Regular, predictable, full attendance is an essential function of this job.

Requirements

  • Must be licensed to work as an optician within the State and keep license up to date and active.
  • Knowledge of optical products and business practices preferred.
  • High school diploma, college degree, and/or big box wholesale, retail, optical, and/or management experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership capabilities, including managing/supervising cross-functional teams, training team members, and driving and communicating results.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, customer service skills, organizational skills and an attention to detail required.
  • Open shift availability required.
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Must have access to patient information and maintain a high degree of discretion and adherence to all privacy and confidential/proprietary company policies and procedures (i.e. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, known as HIPAA).

  • Driving performance and profitability by using reporting to identify trends and areas of opportunity.
  • Identifying and correcting process breakdowns before they negatively impact club performance metrics.
  • Communicating a simple message to the team on the connection between consistent operational performance and achieving club financial targets.
  • Providing a high level of Member service, including answering all incoming calls, scheduling patients for eye exams, being open and honest in communication and maintaining a friendly, pleasant demeanor with Members at all times.
  • Providing support to Members in making eyeglass adjustments, taking measurements, reading prescriptions on the lensometer, timely notification of product readiness, proper handling of all money related transactions, and completing paperwork necessary to place and process orders.
  • Managing Optical department team members and ensuring all team members diligently engage in person and over the phone with Members.
  • Managing all sales opening and closing procedures at the end of the shift.
  • Ensuring that accurate funds are collected, and payments are made at the point of service.
  • Striving to deliver sales and metric goals by educating patients on the benefits of available products, and by recommending those that will improve their visual needs.
  • Spending downtime engaging with members in front of Optical.
  • Communicating and following up with Club Manager and Regional Optical Manager regarding department performance, maintenance situations, team member’s performance, and doctor relations.
  • Ensuring workstation/Optical department is always maintained and clean.
  • Supervising all team members in the Optical department and being responsible for training, separations, recommendation for promotions, and coaching.
  • Maintaining all club policies and procedures.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
