About The Position

Provide quality patient care services within the dispensary area for the College of Optometry. Provide departmental assistance to University students in developing their opticianry and ophthalmic skills and abilities. Provide operational support for a variety of clinic functions, including inventory, purchasing, pricing, etc. Provide supplemental support for the optical fabrication laboratory.

Requirements

  • AAS degree in opticianry or equivalent experience in lieu of degree.
  • Minimum of three years of prior experience working as an optician or in the optical field.
  • ABO certified or able to obtain certification within 1 year of hire.
  • Demonstrated successful experience working directly with people from diverse backgrounds, including cultural, educational, socioeconomic, and life experiences.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in optical inventory management
  • Previous optical lab fabrication experience
  • Knowledge of optometry software including electronic records
  • Five years experience working as optician or in the optical field.

Responsibilities

  • Assist and instruct optometry students in developing their opticianry skills, including orientation for newly assigned clinical students.
  • Apply working knowledge of insurance policies and benefits to assist patients in the selection of their eyewear.
  • Assist patients in selecting ophthalmic frames.
  • Consult with patients and students to select appropriate lens materials and options; adjust and align frames; and instruct patients in the correct use and proper care of their eyewear and low-vision aids, including delivery and repairs.
  • Verify ophthalmic prescriptions and contact patients.
  • Maintaining frame inventory, including selection, ordering, labeling, pricing, and financial accountability of inventory.
  • Develop and maintain optical industry relationships.
  • Maintain professional development within the area of responsibility.
  • Define and project ophthalmic equipment needs and provide appropriate recommendations to faculty, staff, and administration.
  • Maintain the virtual eyewear system.
  • Reports directly to the Clinic Operations Manager.
  • Responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of designated information.
  • Cultivate an environment of belonging that values, respects, supports, and celebrates individual similarities and differences, allowing students, faculty, and staff to thrive authentically.
  • Support, promote, and develop university student enrollment and retention initiatives.
  • Any other duties assigned within the position classification area.
  • Perform occasional ophthalmic services for off-campus patrons.
  • Assist and/or provide back-up for the optical fabrication lab.
